Aircon Pump and Idle Issue (related)
« on: 07 May 2009, 16:29:41 »

On my 2.5 Elite - it's idling a shade "low" and a tad lumpy - even with the climate on.

Usually the revs should increase with climate on - and decrease with climate off - which is normal operation.

Now - when you turn the climate on or off - there is no change in engine tone.

In addition - although the pulley turns with the belt, the "clutch?" doesn't seem operational in the AC pump.

Can anyone advise? Pump knackered?

Had a similar problem few years ago and that was low charge in system..it appears that with a hot day the gas can expand and even if low will allow system to run..when it cools down compressor will not engage..my bet is it needs a recharge.

The clutch should still engage.
When this happened to me the fault was that the connector to the "secondary thermo switch" was loose, it is a earth return for the 'aircon pump', pushed it back on and 'Hey Presto!'
The clever OOF person who told me was 'Mark' in Nottingham.
The secondary thermo switch is the lower of the two screwed into the right-hand side of the rad, access from underneath only.
good luck
