Couple of little issues - Idle & Tram lining
« on: 10 May 2009, 10:13:48 »

I've done a bit of research and it appears the tram lining issue is common.

However, first small issue is how the car idles after it's been started up cold, after it was driven a few hours before hand.

I drive it 2.5 miles to work in the morning and park it up. When I get back to it later, and start it up, I can definitely hear a misfire of some sort, the V6 rumble is irregular. The revs do not stay the same. After a minute of driving, it's fine, and it sounds absolutely perfect.

I am aware that I'm driving it the worst possible distance, on a cold engine, and this is probably one of, if not THE only, reason for this. However, anyone have any other suggestions? I am looking into getting a bike for the work commute, better than averaging 17mpg!

Secondly, the car handles well but on country roads it will tram line chronically. The camber of the road will make the car change direction abrubtly. This makes country driving somewhat interesting.

I have heard that this is from the toe-in setting that comes from the factory. Can anyone confirm this? How much to get it changed?

Thanks for any help, I'll get a photo up presently.

Hi Welcome to the forum.

My car tram lined quite badly and it turned out to be the steering idler. The VX part is about £30 and relatively easy to change IF you can "break" the joint (use a splitter tool or two hammers method). It changed the car dramatically. Toe in/out (tracking) on its own as a setting is probably a tenner at a tyre place.

Someone will probably suggest spending around £70 plus to get your car tracked, cambered and toe in/out all spot on at somewhere like Wheels in Motion but you need to be confident that bushes, steering idler etc aren't worn first. Update your profile with auto/manual, location as this will help with any future queries.

A regular bit of easy maintenance on the Omega is to clean the idle air control valve (top right of the engine). Unplug it, prise outand squirt and shake with carb cleaner till it is cleaner. That is simple 5 min job which may improve things.

If I were to get anything done then it would be at a garage, however I do not need it to be absolutely perfect. I much prefer cruising about than blasting down B roads; my previous car was better at the B road blasting!

I understand what you say about getting work done before finding out where the real problem lies, though.

I will certainly look into the idle air control valve, that sounds like something even I can do :).

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have amended my location/car appropriately.

There are a few things to check really.
Some tyres tramline worse than others, but Cambers can also need adjusting by someone who knows what they are doing.
Have a look on the inside edge of your tyres especially the front ones, are they bald or wearing?
Get a bar under and see if the wishbone bushes have had it.

All four tyres were advisories for the MOT I had in March.

The rear ones will be changed shortly, the front ones, I was assured, had 3 months of driving left. I don't drive particularly hard or excitedly so I hope they do last that long, because at £100ish a (decent) tyre, it's fairly hard on the wallet. Still, worth checking, will look closer at the tyre walls.
