Whats wrong with it ???

There is a little list of things wrong with my car and its out of MOT, I'll list the ones I'm stuck with here and if you can give any help it would be brillant and save me from continuing a life of bangernomicts.

From the day I bought the car its had a bit of an oil leak, wasn't much so didn't stress about it.

About a month ago it started leaking something, had a check and the expansion tank for the coolant was dry, so I started topping that up as well.

Then in the run up to xams and the end of the MOT (26th dec) my car developed a problem where the engine cuts out when reved above 2500 revs.

I've got no idea whats wrong with it and have almost no experince fixing cars (biggest job I've ever done was changing the front disks on this car). But I don't want to buy another guff cheap car and if I can't fix this thats what it will be.

Howdoo and welcome.

Oil is probably a cam cover gasket.  Not the hardest or most expensive job, but needs confirmation.

Water leak could be a hose but probably the heater bypass valve.  Again, needs confirmation.

Car cutting out could be linked to the cam cover gaskets allowing oil into the plug leads....

Bottom line - please update your profile with car. location, etc and quite possible someone could look it over for you and give a fai assessment of whats wrong then we can take it from there...

I read your first post. A leak from the back of a v6 is almost certianly the HBV.

Leaking cam covers and HBV should be done in one go to make it easier on yourself 8-)

But paperclip it first before you even open the bonnet.

Cheers to all for the advice, this seems to be the general concensis on whats probably wrong. Going to paperclip it today, I'll post the result up (whats the best way to upload a video so I can show you all the result ?

Question, when you say needs confirming. If I take pictures of where the leaks are coming from would that help ?

OK done the paperclip, got back 19 - Incorrect RPM Signal.

is that just cos the engine wasn't on or was that the fault when it was cutting out ?

19 = Get a new crank sensor fitted asap or be prepared to walk home. (current wisdom is to only use genuine vx sensor, ebay ones seem unreliable)

dropped you a PM.

I forgot to add at the start that my window washers don't work. Is there a general fault that happens with these ? I think it might be the pump (there is 2 as one is the headlight washers but only 1 makes a noise. but no water comes out of either.) I had planned to sort this but reading haynes it seems like the whole front of the car needs to come off. So any advice before I try that would be great.

You can just pull the washer pump out, take off the grill, only 3 screws, it's the small one ;)

If all four jets have stopped its probably the filter at the tank end.   There is a maintenance guide on how to deal with this, but you certainly don't have to remove bumpers etc.

If just a couple of the jets have stopped, clean them out with a pin.

I get code 19 with mine with engine off but was told its because of that. Engine off???

Without engine running you should get 31 (not 19)

31 = no signal
19 = poor quality signal (noisy or intermittant)
