My car keeps cutting out :-(
« on: 09 May 2009, 21:55:44 »

My Elite keeps cutting out, and starts first time on the key. This started a few months back and would only cut out once or twice during the course of the day, now only recently she cut's out more but again starts first turn of the key. There are no fault codes. What could be the cause of this problem? Crankshaft sensor maybe?

If no codes, in particular a 19 (as there should be a 31 anyway), then I look at cleaning up ICV

will be icv Paul. Mustard pot sized aluminium canister on pass side of plenum. Jubiled clip and a plug at the back. Spray internals with carb cleaner and soak a bit. Then light oil. 10 minute job, but make sure the rubber seal to plenum is air tight, mine was a very poor fit and needed insulation tape round the valve inlet to take up the slack.

Dont be tempted(as some idiot did on my old car ::) ) to stick a screw driver in the valve to see if its free/moves ok. Its quite easy to chip the edge of the valve, and then it WILL stick. Bloody idiot, dont know who it was  ::)....

I have cleaned the iacv, all breather pipes are clear, black eco box is clear, everything has been cleaned. The only other thing I can do is do another paperclip test and go from there.

I have just done the paperclip test and the code that has come up is code 19. I take it this is pointing to the crank sensor?

Ah well looks like I need to change the crank sensor at the end of the month when I get paid again. Thank god I don't use my car for work.

Yep 19 - replace crank sensor.

You may still need to clean ICV again before you completely cure cutting out problems!
