blimey - sounds like you've got religion too.. ::)

And lo, it came to pass that there was a blight upon the face of the Earth, and its name was Vauxhall the modern useless mechanic, whose demons spread alarm and despondency among men, saying "Your head gasket has gone, for there is yellow stuff in your red stuff, that's 29 pounds please, thankyou."  Then there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth of one who made music.

But a great light shone forth in the name of OOF, whose ministering angels said "Be not afraid, musicman, for there is no fault with your head gasket.  Put your trust in us and we shall solve your problems", and a great calm fell upon the musician.  The Vauxhall modern useless mechanic demons, hearing this, were much abashed, saying "Who are these angels, who know so much more of Vauxhalls the basics of how a modern engien works than we, the anointed ones?"  And they removed their heads from their bottoms and ran off.

Here endeth today's lesson.

I could only see the last one (pic of the dipstick, indicating you need an oil change ;))

Lol, yes, oil has zero signs of headgasket failure but shows need of a change.

I can also tell that you either dont do short journeys or hav recently done a good long journey.

At least you have a proper gearbox (and not one with the internal workings of a black and decker cordless screwdriver!)

I should add, the method you have used to get heat is not good, you have disconnected the main vac feed to the cabin and multirams.

This will mean:

No direction control of the heater settings
No multiram operation which kills low down torque and mpg

You should disconnect the pipe from the top of the bypass valve and block it off as the temporary fix!

Right so:

1) When did the heating pack up?

2) When did the coolant loss start?

I think your heating problem could just be an air lock in the system somewhere. the exact same thing happened on my old 328i a few years back. The solution was this.
1. Turn on engine, set heating to maximum heat, turn engine off.
2. Drain cooling system
3. Refill cooling system with fresh coolant
4. Squeeze the top and bottom radiator hozez (with expansion tank cap OFF) until no more bubbles come up.

Problem solved!!!

Have you tried replacing the coolant yet?

As for the head gasket, if there is no "mayonaise" in the oil filler cap, dipstick or coolant expansion tank, your head gaskets are fine.
How is the engine running generally (poor heating aside)?

Regards, Niall

hi again, well i got to be honest, i only ever do short journeys in my car, a distance of between 5 - 20 miles max, i use the car on about 2 days of the week, sometimes i dont even use it for a good 7 days as im normally travelling in my big iveco van to our gigs, so no need for my car.

Mark, how did you know about my long journey? Your right!
Last saturday, i drove 250 miles in total, so it had a good run i guess?   The heating problem started about 3 weeks before "the boy" looked at it to say about the vac solenoid problem, not sure when that was exactly,
i only noticed the coolant problem on Tuesday when i set off to vauxhall, up came "coolant low" on my dashboard, never seen that before ever, but have to be brutally honest, i dont check these things when i should!   There wasnt any coolant loss when i was on my way back from nottingham on saturday, though the engine was warmed up, if that makes a difference?
I have noticed since taking that pipe off, that my car doesnt seem as nippy

don't all ask me why i did this!
but.... should the oil filler cap and the inside where you pour the oil smell slightly of "petrol"  not much, but ever so slightly,  ::)

i just been outside since i added more coolant yesterday and the level hasnt dropped at all, then again i havent driven it since Tuesday night..
guess that would make a difference to the levels anyway  :)
