Starting to hack me off now!
« on: 10 June 2009, 09:53:48 »

Hello all, Just got my car back from the garage. New cat fitted the other was blocked. I now have quite a loud tapping noise that I assume is the lifters. The garage advised an oil filter change & flush plus an additive called lifter treatment. I will try this at the weekend. I am now having start from cold issues as well as the odd cut out at slow speed again!! I will re-fit my new vaux crank sensor again, I took it off last time because the car ran worse than with the old one! I am still getting code 135 & 19 any other thoughts would be much appreciated.....  :-/ :y

135 is telltale voltage low and by all accounts nothing to worry about.
19 is crank sensor.

Be careful about additives; some do more harm than good, but an oil and filter change isn't a bad idea to start with.

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

with your location i would be asking Kevin Wood in Alton to have a look at it with his tech 2. Sounds like you have some gremlins. If you have a pattern crank sensor fitted throw it directly in the bin and fit a new genuine vx item with the cable routed away from the exhaust not as factory fit. Certainly would not re fit a suspect one. Idle control valve can cause stalling also, clean with carb cleaner. May need  regular soaking if its tired.(but you may know all that.) hth

in my experience the flush wont be necessary, and im told your risk blocking the oil pick up pipe in the sump if bits of marmite work loose inside the engine. Just change the oil and filter imho. If it persist post it up, but another quick fire oil change should sort it out.

But you say "you now have a loud tapping" was it not there before the garage got hold of it?

I'd be happy to take a look but I am not going to be around until late next week, I'm afraid. :-/

If you have a persistent 19 code your crank sensor is suspect, as you say. I too would try a known good crank sensor first (go for a genuine VX one).

Not sure about the tapping. Odd that it started when the cat was changed. Makes me wonder if it's the exhaust manifold blowing?

Thanks Kevin. It only seemed to start after my cat was changed, although it was making so much noise I may have missed it. I have now done an oil & filter change and the noise is still there. The car was stood for 7 months, rta, before I got it back on the road I wonder if that has any bearing on the problem?  I have a genuine vaux sensor that I will try at the weekend. I would appreciate coming to see you for tech 2 diagnosis - please let me know when you are available :y

If it has stood for a time it's possible that one of the lifters has drained. They do take a while to fill on these engines. I'd say give it a few days' use and see if it gets better.
