My head gasket progress...
« on: 11 June 2009, 17:26:12 »

Hi All,

just posting some images of my damaged HG's  :'(

Here is where the oil poured out from at the back of the left head.

It gets worse !!!

Here is the whole head gasket ...

And yes it is as bad as it looks, the outer was stuck to the head and the inner stayed on the block!
How did this not leak :o

And and piccy of the car itself

Blah, that's got some life in it yet.... bit of sealant, and slap it back on there ....  ;D ;D ;D

Seriously - I'm guessing it's run without antifreeze?

It ran 50/50 since i got it a year ago.
Who knows what the other 160000 miles were like  :o

To be fair the engine is in very good nick for the mileage.
Clean values/pistons, smooth bores, good cams.
Even the followers pumped out clean oil, not black muck.

Certainly think it's run for a while on water though.
When I got it I flushed it four time with caustic and several more with clean to stop it overheating.
Lots of crap came out, probably where the missing meat from the head gaskets went !

Makes me wonder, and worry, what ours looks like.  4-pot with 160K on the clock, no history before our ownership (3 years?).   Some unexplained coolant loss too.  [anxiousness smilie]

Hope it all goes back together nicely for you.  :)

Primed the followers and re-fitted before the rain returned.
Hoping to get the left head back on and the right head off this w/end.
If it stays dry!

Well if oil was coming out of there then your breathers are blocked.

It was not leaking from there, however someone must have done it up far to tight.  >:(

When i went to do it back it up it snapped as soon as it started to tighten  :(

Anyone got a spare???

I meant the oil leak from the head gasket, that area is at a neg pressure so should draw air in rather than leak oil out.

As for not leaking, the fire rings are still very much intact and the outer gasket is still there hence why no leak.

The oil leak was much worse at high revs, just shear quantity of oil passing by?
Checked the breathers, etc and all are clear.

The second head gasket had the barest slither of material around the edge. Looked just ready to go big style!
