how hot is just too hot?
« on: 17 June 2009, 21:10:12 »

Hi all, after a full (double) coolant flush ,and new rad cap and header tank,my car is still reaching 100 fairly quickly. This is too hot right? All fans seem to cut in at right time and new coolant still looks pristine.
Anyone know of any other possibilties?
Thanks everyone.

Shell if the fans are kicking in at 97 degress according to the gauge the car should cool back down to the running temperature of 95 degrees.

high probability; thermostat..

you can test it by immersing it in boiling water ..

if it doesnt open/close completely will cause that..

I would not say stat, these fail open.

I have seen a few cases where the instrument panel does not have the correct code index programmed causing the temp gauge to read about 5 degC to high.

Could be water pump failing? limited water flow unless revs high.

You may be right..

but on history I win against two old mechanics..

Mine was reaching also 100.. One said its normal, the other said wash the radiator.. I change the stat..

Now I never see above 96-97 even I hammer it climbing mountains..

It maybe that as you say the panel is not reading correctly and showing too high, but about 2 weeks ago when i let it hit 100 in traffic, the car bubbled over through rad cap and a few days later split the header tank. That was worrying me cos it seemed to be showing sign of really getting too hot.
Do i need tech 2 thingy to check the guage?
thanks

The Master has just said what was said last week or so about the clocks may need setting to the car, like another members at a Newent Meet.
Also like already said when thermostats fail they fail open as the spring gets weaker not stronger :y

Check that the fans are working, might be worth taking off the radiator and putting some Furnox  Central Heating Cleaner in it :y

Regardless of the accuracy of the gauge .. if it drops at speed then the water temperature is reducing, so the same should happen when the fans kick in.

You say the fans are running .... I wonder .. do you have climate control ?? is the aircon on ?? if so the fan will run anyway. The best way to scheck is to turn the aircon OFF so no fans are running and let the car warm up on its own ...  you can then see which fans start at what temperature (indicated).

This should help decide if it is a fan issue or a water circulation issue.
