Just a quick question.

What is the easiest and safest way to drain the petrol tank?

I had the misfortune to right my mig off the other day and it still has 20 litres of fuel in it that I could use in the wifes car.

Disposable syphon pump, costs 99p. You could also drill a hole in the tank (using a hand drill of course) as the tank is only plastic.

I know that the car is a writeoff but drilling a hole in the tank does sound a bit excessive.

It is the easy way, but OK it is your choice. you can remove the inspection hatch (4 self tappers) and syphon it out. I suggest you filter it before adding to another car.

Disconnect fuel filter, and apply 12v to the pump

Take HT leads off to stop car from starting.

Take a large petrol can (or repeat with a small can), undo the 19mm fuel line, (back of your engine) stick it in your petrol can and turn your engine over. Stop once can is full, empty and repeat.

You will be cranking for a long time with 20L in the tank. A better bet is to remove the fuel pump relay and bridge the pair of contact pins (the wider pair of the two).

Keep any electrical connections well away from petrol fumes to avoid an explosion. Better to do this in the open with the petrol can at the back of the car and the electrical bodge at the front.

Well when I wanted to drain my tank in the past (for replacement) I simply jacked it down after unbolting it from the car and then carefully tip the whole remaining contents into suitable containers.  Simples!!

I filled a 5litre can in under 2mins. So 8 mins for 20 litres. Remember at this point there is no regulator creating back pressure. I can see what you are saying though, it does sound safer. It's just the way I did it.
