Exhaust Manifold off to replace zorst flexi?
« on: 26 June 2009, 08:21:28 »

Just popped the 2.2 into old chunky in town to see if he could bodge me on a new flexi joint.

Lot of head scratching between him and his mate while it was on the ramp, after a lot of pondering they said it would be a verrrry long winded job, involving the exhaust manifold off and dropping the entire exhaust.

Is that really needed just to replace the flexi joint?

Is there an actual purpose to the flexi, or can it be replaced with a section of pipe, or just have a feking big clamp put around it?

No, a new flex was welded in, one and a half year ago.
When it bursts again, I saw it off, and put a new one in, different size, with two clamps. (I hope).

I would imadgine thet the flexi joint is in there to help the rubber exhaust holders and minimise movement \ Breaking on the exhaust, so if you make it solid ie a bit pipe instead of the flexi joint you could dammage your exhaust elswhere. if the flexi joint is at the front on the down pipe then I would think you have to take the whole thing appart. but thats just my thinking. I'm probably wrong anyway, someone will correct me. ;)

It needs to be a flexi and its not nearly as hard as they are saying!

Christ, just remove the front pipe and do it on the bench

When you say front pipe, what exactly do you mean?

There is the pipe that comes down from the exhaust manifold then that goes into the flexi, (one piece) the the flexi goes into the cat, which then goes to the zorst.

Whats the best way to take it off?

Well, the front pipe, flex and cat are one section....so disconnect at the manifold and the centre section joint.

The manifold most definately doesn't need to come off

It's just a case of removing the front pipe, taking it away from the car, cutting out the old join, putting in the new, and refit....

Sorry to sound stupid, but on 2.2 how can you remove the front pipe with the manifold still on?
