3.0 cams
« on: 26 June 2009, 09:21:03 »

would it be worth swapping out the cams if the engine has only done 60000 miles,or would it maybe compromise the engine if they were replaced with cams from a high miler?presuming of course that any 3.0 being broken would be high milage.

I wouldnt have said personally that the cams would be one of the items that would have a massive wear and negative effect from high milage...

The only real wear is caused by an oil feed problem and you would feel grooves in the camshaft. There is often a bit of wear on the lobes, that is normal - as long as it still feels smooth.

I don't know about the gains, I thought it just swapped BHP for torque or vice-versa.

No parts (except cams) needed.

Tools however are a different matter, torx bits (int & ext), cam lock off kit, T26 socket (or 16mm double hex), pipe clip pliers, torque wrench spring to mind.

ADDITION
You will need some gasket sealant for the rocker gaskets. If you are replacing use only VX genuine ones, pat parts are awful.

Adds approx 18-20BHP and some torque too...as Markey says, never seen any appreciable wear on any 3.0 cams I have ever seen...just a matter of stripping it down to replace the middle inlet cams with the 3.0 ones and putting it back together including of course retiming (and the timing must be spot on!)

Would need to use a micrometer to get the cam dimensions, I would think.

The followers are of a larger diameter than the cam lobe is wide so there would be no appreciable wear ridge on the cam itself to guage it by.

are there any other parts from a 3.0 worth putting on a 2.5 to improve power apart from the cams?
