my 3.0 sounds like an air compressor please help
« on: 27 June 2009, 13:43:56 »

I have bought a 3.0 elite and it was cheap, so i knew there would be faults with the car, i am sorting them out one at a time, and slowly and with the help of the forum getting there, but the problem that i can't seem to get my head around is coming from the engine bay ,i have found the location of the noise and have made it good [or so i thought ],it is a thin stainless pipe that runs along the block , it is connected to another stainless pipe with a small piece of rubber hose, this rubber hose has split and hot fumes from the exhaust is coming out. The fumes are very hot and the more you rev the engine the harder the gasses come out ,it sounds like a compressor, i have changed the pipe but it only cured it for a few miles and it has melted and burst again, i have also noticed that the previous owner has welded a piece of pipe where the rubber was on the other bank, and so, he must have known about this, but alas did not tell me when i bought the car, can anyone tell me the function of this pipe and why mine is getting hotter than a hot piece of hotness that has just come out of the oven [and you don't get much hotter than that] .I would be grateful for any information about this pipe and the canister it goes too, if any one knows about it ,i  have been looking through the posts but nothing yet, ghost driver ,a member of the forum came over, but like me can't shed any light on the situation hope someone can help JK :'(

Sounds like the 1 way valve has failed in the SAI system, thus allowing hot gases to escape.

The other option is the exhaust is blocked, so exhaust gases finding anyother way out.

air pump in front of  passenger front wheel pumps air in to exhaust via 1 way valve into each exhaust manifold

Looking at posts on the search it seems that you can remove a 50 amp fuse to disable it, is this true and if so where is the fuse --thanks JK

well i have had a better look now that i know what im looking for,and have discovered that the pump is working quietly and stayed on for about a minuet, during this time i felt the pipes [stainless to see what happened and also as the rubber was missing and i could see which way the exhaust fumes were going,it turns out that both stainless pipes were sending out hot exhaust fumes but the rubber pipes directly attached to the pump did not increase in temp, only the ones that run along the engine block itself and also the steel part at the front of the engine, was getting hot quickly, i then went to the back of the car and there was almost no pressure coming out of the rear of the exhaust pipe.I have never had an exhaust pipe on a car that has been blocked internally ,can anyone explain how and why this happens as i now think this might be the cause as  THE BOY  suggested earlier--JK

The exhausts can block when the internals corrode and the "horse hair" type wadding goes everywhere .... on my old miggy this only became apparent after a very loud bang and all this hairy stuff came out of the exhaust pipe !!! New exhaust and suddenly I had a whole lot of performance back as well .. :)

Its not the cats .. its the main boxes .. in my case the rear one .. the cats don't have any "wadding" .. its the silencer boxes that do..  :)

*strokes chin* I've been pulling bits of horsehair out of my exhaust for the last three days, it's spitting it out in lumps - worth replacing? Will I need just the back box, or the centre section too?

I ran about in an old Micra for a bit, was quite entertaining when I pulled out onto a main road, gave it a bit of throttle, huge bang and the wadding spat out like a cannon...

 8-)

When I changed mine I went for a complete "cats back" ... as IMHO if one part of the system is that badly worn out.. the rest is probably about to follow it :)

Luckily the new miggy had a stainless system already on it ...  :)
