bubbling noise and wet pass foot well.
« on: 28 June 2009, 22:50:07 »

just pulled up after 30 minute drive on some twisty back roads, turned the engine off and was about to get out when i heard a fairly loud bubbling noise from behind the cc panel/head unit.never heard this before and it could be clearly heard over the usual vent motor noise you get when you switch the car off. First thought, heater matrix.

Checked the coolent level no change. No water under the car. Scuttle drain is bone dry even though i put the car through a car wash this morning, so its not that.

Checked the pass side foot well and there is a small trickle of water running down from where the trim that surrounds the hand break and gear lever ends by the carpet/glove box.Not enough fluid to affect the coolent level, probably about 2 egg cups full, its clear as far as i can tell, does not feel slippery like coolent is, and is tasteless, not sweet like coolent is. It has not rained since this morning.

There is a small piece of black foam that looks like its there for cusioning a black piece of black molded gubbins by what looks and sounds like it could be a vent flap motor? This piece of black foam is soaking wet and when pressed water runs out of it.
Its only just started as there is no residue in the area and the carpet shows no staining on the back etc.

Where it not for the water appearing to be clear and not coolent i would say its the matrix, but it is clear, odorless, tasteless and room temp. its not warm as it surely would be after a half hour drive.

Where is the water coming from? Blocked ac drains maybe? Not likely as there is 2 of them and seem tucked up above the gear box.... Any thoughts?
Cheers

Chris.

Hi Chris

You question about blocked ac drains ?
on my car, in this hot weather, I get two clear water drips/puddles under my car, driver and passenger side, while the air con is on full blast.

Re drains will give it a cold blast and see.

tried ac flat out and the drains are both dripping away nicely and roughly the same amount from each.
There's no more water running onto the carpet but the bit of black sponge is still wet and when pressed still oozes water, its not dried out at all since yesterday, like is still collecting water. It also smells like ac, it has that dank musty smell that ac sometimes gives off. Maybe time for one of those ac "bombs" on the back seat? Will that help? If its not condensation from the ac then i dont know what it is.

Got to be worth getting that dry. Be it towels/doors open/hairdryer...anyway you don't need me to tell you how to dry stuff!!

Soon as its dry you can start tracing the fault, etc. If no more water appears, then whoopee. But at present you could have already cured the problem, but you'll never know whilst that carpet remains damp.

ive got something similar happening, dried out the passenger carpet at weekend, left mats out and then watched it slowly getting wet yesterday as i drove around.

ive got a little water/wet near the gear stick carpet area but it must be running down cos the real wet patch is right at the front of the footwell and along edge of sill.

where exactly are the air-con drains?

drains exit from under the car, one either side of the gear box/gear lever area, as said earlier, leave the ac running flat out on "lo" and look under the car, you should see 2 steady drips of water about 18 inches apart.
