big problem!!!!
« on: 03 July 2009, 05:46:14 »

Last night i was on my way out and got to a local petrol station and a bloke told me i had water coming from the engine so i moved it to the side then watch as it emptied itself onto the floor. Im assuming it was the coolant as it was a pinkish red but it seemed to be comingfrom the bottom of the engine and from around one of the pullies. Also i noticed that it looked like one of pullies was bent and although the belt was still on didnt look likeit would stay there so for the next half hour it just kept coming out and there was nothing i could do. any suggestion as i have got to get it recovered today and dont know what to do from there? oh and also when this was do this i was making a very funny noise

It's most likely the bearings have failed in the water pump causing the shaft to drop off centre, it would then leak heavily around the shaft.

If it seems to be leaking from front of engine, waterpump is most likely culprit.  Other possibilities are a leak in the V (stat, oil cooler etc), but that tends to leak down the back, or from the throttle bodies (easily seen)

If you have the cambelt DVD, you'll see its not too bad.  Quite a lot of stuff needs to be removed to get to it.

System takes less than 10l of antifreeze, so buy a 5l bottle of Vauxhall Red from delaer, and mix 50:50 - that will be more than enough

if its was the water pump would or could it have cause any other problems? When i moved it into the parking space and turned it off the was still half the coolant left in the tank that drained through.

Impossible to say until your stripped it and removed it.  If the waterpump has exploded, then there may be bits of it running around the cooling system.

If the aux belt looks in tack, then its unlikely to have damaged cambelt etc, though obviously check the condition (and timing if poss) of it when you have it stripped down.

If it is the waterpump bearing that have failed, I think you are likely to be OK (but impossible to say until state of pump can be seen) :)
