ATF leak !
« on: 31 October 2008, 17:06:56 »

Well it seems these problems come in three's  :) i suppose a good way to look at it is that they are all engine/gearbox related  ;D ;D :o

So anyway i noticed some oily patches on the ground after driving the car, so had a gander's underneath to be greeted by a very oily mess  :-? had a sniff at the suspicious liquid and as far as i can tell its ATF !?

Hellova mess as you can see, Whats the most common place for them to leak ?

1998 2.5 V6 Elite

Thanks  :D

Thats the thing i really am not sure, it has a smell but isnt very distinct but it smells more like ATF than engine oil only because the engine oil has a petroly smell to it  :o

dab it lightly with a white tissue, allow it to soak into it & if its atf youll soon tell by the colour the tissue goes [if that makes any sense!] mind you im so used to the smell of it id just give it a sniff ;)

i thought the torque converter was a dry unit? both my engines were dry between the t/c and engine/gearbox
looks like engine oil to me, maybe running down the back and on/round the gearbox

i didnt do too bad on atf loss, i kept a trolley jack under the bellhousing to keep it "nose up" & changed the seal under the car,[done on 2 axle stands & 2 jacks to drop box!] mind you getting the atf smell out of your clothes afterwards is impossible!!, unless somebody has found an answer to that cos my mrs gave up trying but of course didnt give up moaning :(

no not the dust cover, the oil seal sits at the back of the b/housing where the t/c goes through & main shaft sticks out, so to change it the t/c has to come out & then youll see it :)
