Homer has too much Idle!
« on: 12 July 2009, 17:14:02 »

When I picked homer up, the previous owner told me about having to have ''some electrical valve that does something with the air'' fitted. Big shiny thing rhs of plenum = IACV.

Homer stalled on me a couple of times at low revs, so i thought i'd take the hoses off and give the throttle body a bit of a squirt with carb cleaner, plus replace the dirty air filter, then make sure all hoses were nice and tight.

Thought i'd cracked it, no more stalling, but then the idle speed started to sit between 1500-1800 rpm with no load (i.e in park or neutral) I've had another look under the hood and felt the plug into the back of the IACV wasn't on tight so i've plugged that in properly, fired up and bingo! cold engine and idle of just over a grand........ for 10 seconds! :(

Now the idle is back up to the 1500-1800 rpm mark.

Homer is a 2000 W 2.5 CD saloon Auto with LPG conv. The above is occuring on LPG or petrol. Homer is also going in for an LPG service on wednesday (new filter, safety check etc.)

Generally speaking, Homer responds very well to the gas pedal, accelerating smoothly and will maintain whatever speed I want to run at. No lights appear on the dash while running and no check comments appear on MFD.

I've plugged in an OBD reader that i've got, but seeing the posts on this site I assume that isn't talking to Homer as it is coming up with no errors.

Any inital thoughts?

air leak!

check the rubber gasket around the IACV - make sure it is seated properly.  else plenum may not be re-fitted correctly.

try spraying carb cleaner around carious bits - when engine picks up, you know you've found the leak

oh and check the obvious - make sure that the throttle closes fully and that someone has not wound the stop open to compensate for a failing IACV

So.....

Checked for leaks and coudln't find any. Thats not to say there aren't any, but the hoses seem ok and the clips are on tight.

Checked out the IACV. If you unplug the thing whilst running, the revs start to hunt, presumably the ecu is doing it's best to idle minus the IACV!

Also pulled the IACV out whilst idling.....lots of vaccum followed by stall, so think that this is working ok.

Noticed that the two centre oil breather pipes were not seated correctly (At back of engine) One is in fact bodged because it is split :( So have reseated the good one and pushed the split one on as far as it will go for now, will either replace this or use a small jubilee clip to resolve.

I don't think the LPG system is working correctly, as after checking and adjusting the pipes, the idle was starting off normal, but then you get the slightest whiff of LPG....whilst on petrol!!! Methinks that is not good, so wednesdays LPG service cannot come soon enough!

I also think this maybe be causing the revs to rise...

Throttle body is closed on idle btw  :y

I think for now it's best to get the LPG filter replaced and the system checked and set up, at least that way I can rule that out of the equation.

Once again, thanks for the advice  :y

hia sorry to hear your having snags with your motor.

firstly i know you have cleaned your IACV and reseated your hoses. but have you clean the 1.6mm hole out in the banyon and cleaned out your breather hoses?

the other one have you turned your LPG off and then used the car to see how she reacts? i find that the LPG system is way more sensitive to any faults then the petrol side and it will flag a fault up to you sooner then on petrol.

good luck hope it all goes well.
