I have replaced the battery on my 7 year old Omega 2.2 CD petrol auto again recently. The first one failed at 4years/40k miles and the second at 7years/68k miles. I use the car most days for relatively short journeys, 15 to 20 miles is this a typical life for a battery?

i think thats about right, i suppose it depends on make of battery really.

Like Alf says, it all depends on the make of the battery.

Most will say battery’s will last longer on cars that go on long runs, and are used every day etc etc...

However, My dad has a 11 year old Astra, he’s had it 6 years and NEVER fitted a battery on it! The battery didn’t look new when he bought the car either! - Its a genuine Vauxhall battery... I wonder if it’s the original??? Who knows!

Thanks for the comments, I suspect that shorter journeys will not allow the battery to recover its charge especially in the winter when there is more demand on the battery anyway, ie cold starting. On the other hand I owned a 7yearold Cavalier a few years ago with the original battery.Are batteries designed not to last long these days?

Considerably less electrical laod on an Astra though.

And yes, short journeys do tend to put greater strain on a battery

My Omega original battery failed at 7 years. Replaced it with a battery place job and that failed at 2 years and two weeks. Lots of short journeys and air con on low etc . Soi would say you are doing alright.

Just replaced my 2001 Elite's battery as it was beginning to lose its charge if the car was not used for a week. So I am not too upset with an 8 year life. Replaced with an Exide 66AH from local stealers, 3 year warranty, for £53 trade price. That said I had a Nissan from new that I sold after 11 years with the original battery still going strong both in winter and summer!!!

My battery was going fine UNTIL I accidently dropped  table condiment all over it...

Ended up with Assalt and battery ?
