Where fuse 9(automatic transmission) should be someone(previous owner) has connected a small 12 volt bulb in holder,with wires and spade connectors into the fuse holder.In park and neutral it glows slightly,in reverse it lights bright(engine running or not).I tried the correct fuse(10) and it blew when engine running and put into reverse.My reverse lights dont work(bulbs are ok).Never thought much of it before,thinking it was just some kind of test bulb and as it lit in reverse i thought this fuse was for reversing lights.Now know its the autobox fuse.Dont know if its linked to my stalling problem?Any ideas whats going on here?

as i see it for a bulb to illuminate it would also need a negative feed, so by you putting a fuse in place of the bulb you are creating a dead short, i would drop the fuse box down & trace the wires from the back of fuse holder 9, i wouldnt mind betting youll find some onion has played about & put a negative/ground/0v on it.

had a look and doesnt look like the wires going to fuse 9 have been tampered with.
Also the reverse L.E.D. at the gear lever is very dim compared to others.could it be the something to do with the gear selector switch?
just realised i maybe should have posted this in electrical and audio,if anyone wants to or can move it?

A bulb doesnt need a negative 'feed' as such,just a flow of current.  The current that would have flowed thro' the fuse,obviously been substitued 'cause previous owner couldnt discover why fuse was blowing.
The fact that fuse is blowing in Reverse is why the bulb is glowing bright in reverse-something is knackered,probably shorted.
I see reverse lights dont work..  I'm thinking reverse light switch......

Part of the selector switch on the side of the g/box.

Sounds to me like something on that circuit is shorting when in reverse and the bulb has been fitted as a bodge to limit the current and overcome the fuse blowing. 

Perhaps a selector switch problem?

Either way it needs sorting as the gearbox ECU will be getting a very poor 12v supply.

ok,i have found a post about taking off the switch and checking/cleaning it.i'm doing that today.

Took switch off and opened it up.firstly had some water drops in it,the rubber seal seemed to have shrunk so there was a gap.part of the contacts(on black plastic part)were a bit pitted as if shorting.i cleaned it up rubbed it down smooth at this part,nice and flat now.Cleaned all contacts.
I tried closing it back together first and turning the switch back and forth and opened it and i could see marks showing all contacts were touching where they should.put it back together(smeared a little silicone on gap in rubber first) and fitted to car.No difference,still blows fuse,put the bulb back in,it still lights in reverse etc.
Tried a 20 fuse,it blew tried a 30 it didnt blow but heated up and started to melt.did notice reversing lights work with 30 fuse in.wont be putting 30 back in though,have to use the bulb or auto box wont work.

Try disconnecting the OUTPUT from the switch,then engage reverse,if its still shorting then the switch or wiring to is at fault. Otherwise.........

if the plug is disconnected from the switch the wiring where the fault lies is disconnected-no led lights at gear lever etc.
