Instant death

I was driving along this afternoon and the car just died instantly.

I coasted to a halt and tried to start, but no go.

Symptoms:

  • Dash lights come on when the main beam lights are switched on.
  • Indicators work and the little green lights work on the dash when they flash. The same for hazard lights.
  • Stereo works as does the colour sat-nav screen.
  • When I turn the ignition on there are no dash lights coming on that would normally come on when the ignition is switched on (Ignition, ABS, EML etc.)

  • Engine turns, but does not fire (similar to the crank sensor symptoms), but there are no lights on the dash that you'd expect.

RAC came out, tried all fuses in dash and near battery. Retested and reconnected all earths, including those under the battery.

Any ideas?

I wonder what the alternator charging voltage was.....

It sounds very electrical!

Check fuse 15, (feed to instruments) my omega blows this fuse randomly, still trying to find out why.

Was doing some checking earlier and without fuse 15 in it wont start but if removed whilst engine running it will keep going, just loose the RPM and the ignition light comes on.

RAC man: Mmmm, I'm stumped. I’ve checked everything that is in the manual and I've spoken with the Technical Department, but they haven't got any ideas either. My time is up now (1 hour) so I'll have to tow you home.

Me: OK; so you're sure all the fuses are ok then?

RAC Man: Yep they're all fine. That’s what I don't understand. All the earth's and the battery voltages are perfect. All the fuses are intact. Your indicators work, the green lights on the dash come on when the indicators flash; it doesn't make any sense to me.

Me: OK, as long as you're sure it isn't a fuse then I guess I'll have to go online to the omega Owners Forum as a 1st shout and see if they have any ideas. Failing that I'll have to go to a garage. Bugger!

I’ve just been outside to check fuse 15 as per Weds’s advice above^. Bang on! 1st fuse I pulled and it is burnt out.

I suppose I should have checked the fuses myself. At least they were there in 15 minutes and tried their[/i] best; bless them.

I was thinking the same thing though, it would be nice to track down a reason for the 'blowage'.

Good question; I now have a two level plan of action:

    1) A load of fuses from Halfrauds in the glove compartment

    2) Wait for Weds to work it out and let me know :y

Still working on it... I've got a replacement dash to play about with but i think it might be around the anti theft area...  Bit of a strange one, but I'm pleased someone else has the same problem.... Doesn't help you though :-)

One tip, buy a few replacement fuses then with some PVC tape make a tab on the fuse to make pulling out easier and do the same on the new fuses.. It won't cure it but makes changing the fuse easier. Oh, and carry a torch.. For when it blows at night..

Glad it was something minor in the end, Nathan. Had I been driving a Laptop with TIS rather than a barbecue and a half-empty bottle of plonk when you phoned I might have been more use. ;)

Fuse 15 feeds all sorts of circuits - seat and mirror adjustment, seat heating, self-levelling, headlamp levelling, reversing lamps, MID/CID and phone, the engine cooling relays (but not fans), wiper rain sensor, anti-theft system...

Most of these circuits draw their main current from a separate unswitched supply so are unlikely to blow this fuse in a "normal" failure mode but notably the seat heating doesn't appear to. :-/

Do you remember anything odd happening when it failed? Anything that might have activated one of the above circuits?

Of course, it could be that this fuse is run fairly close to its' rating and failed due to fatigue.

if anti theft is involved then would power sounder upset it, if either disconnected or battery acid infected? Just a thought....
