I like James Clavel as a storyteller...
Shogun
Taipan
King Rat etc.....

read all the series (no mean feat) several times, over the years.  Shogun must be at least 10 times, with Taipan a close second..

Also partial to a Geoffrey Archer now and again, when he is not doing time....  Chewing gum for the brain, but quite readable as a trashy novelette...

Para Handy series as good Scots easy reading from a bygone age, similar to Whisky Galore....

.....and sometimes, notes are not taken so that we do not know where to start from..... :-/

i have just finished Richard hammonds book, was a bloody good read and i would recommend it not only to petrol heads either

Just getting into fantasy books at the moment (similar stuff to JRR Tolkien)
Raymond Feist - all books in the Riftwar legacy
Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time series of books (currently on book 6)
