Water pump for V6 ! Cost issue
« on: 22 July 2009, 17:14:40 »

I am preparing to change the cam belt on my V6, I have got the kit, the cam lock kit etc and just viewed the DVD from OOF, absolutley great it is.

However I need to get a water pump to change whilst doing the job. I have just called Vauxhalls parts and they quoted me £114 + vat for the water pump.

I was expecting it to be a little over £20 as mentioned in the DVD and as similar to water pumps advertised on internet part shops.

Have I been given the wrong price or is this correct from VX.  If they are that much will a non VX water pump do the same job at a lesser cost, as there is about £100 difference for the same part.  HELP!!!

It used to be about £30 with the trade card but Vauxhall more than doubled the price a few months ago. You could try www.buypartsby.co.uk I have fitted many of those and never had a problem :y

I would ALWAYS get VX water pumps...had two "clones" a while back...both failed after a few hundred miles...Then used a VX one...haven't had a problem since.

As said, the genuine GM ones doubled in price (both retail and trade prices) late last summer.

Ooh Im left with a bit of a dilemma now, genuine or not for the water pump, over £100 difference but dont want to go through all the change for one to fail, has anyone else had bad experiences with non Vx water pumps... :'(

I have just been researching water pumps and used an OOF recommended site Autovaux.
They show a water pump for the V6 listed as a genuine GM part £26.95 +vat.
http://www.autovaux.co.uk/LoadPortal.aspx?cnum=152&pnum=AS93170697&tabid=5&vnum=141

What say anyone, will this be a genuine Vauxhall part worth of purchase and fitting.

I bought one of those from autovaux earlier this year. it was not a GM part, but an OEM supposedly of the same quality, fitted with a steel impeller.
However, as I had a few problems with the timing gear I had to remove and refit the water pump pulley 2 or 3 times and this resulted in 2 of the threaded holes in the pulley mounting flange stripping. this was because the flange is sintered not machined from solid steel. I managed to get around this by drilling all three holes with a 6.5 mm bit and inserting 3 m6 bolts from the rear and securing the pulley with nuts. But apart from that it was OK.

I have fitted the buypartsby water pumps to many forum members cars and haven't had a problem.
