breathers cleaning
« on: 28 July 2009, 13:17:19 »

Went to the garage a few days ago and asked them to perform the cleaning of the breathers, cause when I removed the large tube from ail filter to throttle body I could see a lot of grease and dirt esspecially on the butterfly. I can only presume the other tubes are a mess also.
The mechanic advised against it as it can cause problems with the throttle body. At least he said it can.
Is this true?
I wanted to do it myself but lack proper tools and a place to do it.
Also one other question.
Small white tube that goes into throttle body, what is it for? I guess that is the intake from fuel pump to throttle body but not certain

Cleaning the breathers is one of the most important regular jobs to do on the omega as it helps stop the build up of pressure that blows the cam cover gaskets.

I have done mine twice without any problems so would say that you have more to gain than lose by doing it.  :y

Ok thanks Scottie.
Can dirty breathers cause anything else than cam gasket blowing (higher consumption, loss of power)?

the fact that the engine is not breathing properly will cause small performance decrease, not really noticable, but the biggest pain is the cam cover gasket blowing.

If this happens, your sparkplug recesses will eventually fill with oil and if it's not sorted out, your ht caps will begin to degrade - the fact that your plug caps will be submerged in oil will also mean that the spark won't be as powerfull which will mean that the DIS pack will try and compensate accordingly potentially leading to premature failure.

I used the guide in the maintainance section, trust me it really is an easy job.

The throttle body butterflies can be cleaned carefully with carb cleaner without damage.

The tube if I remember correctly is all part of the vacuum system.

breather cleaning makes a bigger difference on 4 pot over V6, the thin rubber pipe that runs from the top of the cam cover to the back of the throttle body is known for getting clogged if oil is not changed regually. I had a very noticable increase in power when i cleaned the throttle body and replaced that pipe.

Would have to agree with Tunnie. The thin pipe is usually the worst and makes a huge difference after cleaning. Easy job to do - you should clean the throttle body too as there is a pin hole below the butterfly which also clogs up. Carb cleaner and a new throttle body gasket, no more than 1 hour's work.

Do you have Opel dealers near you? I cleaned mine the first time it was solid, used almost an entire can of Carb Cleaner (which was £2.70) when it came to my dads i replaced the pipe as it cost £0.65p from Vauxhall dealer  ;D

I just clean mine with a lot of carb cleaner and a thin piece of rod to poke down it - you'll be amazed how much black gunk comes out.

Yes Tunnie we do have Opel dealers but trust me these are the real bastards, not the Vauxhall ones like you have in UK. Ussualy everything is much more expensive here than what I read on forum

Guys I need a little help.
Got the tools, already cleaned and replaced some pipes, all that is left is the throttle body.
Going to do it tomorrow but first would like to know a few things to be certain.
1. what excatly to clean on the throttle body?
I mean I've read that I have to clean the butterfly and the small hole under it, and the small vacum pipe.
But can I spray Carb cleaner into those inlets (openings)  on the throttle body, also if I can spray all of them or just the one where pipe from the engine is connected and the acum pipe?

Well I cleaned it and the car ours lie a cat close to a fireplace :D
But man was it dirty. When I took it off you couldn't even see the metal part of the butterfly.
And that small hole was completely blocked.
Also the consumpiton when standing still droped immediatelly for about 0.3 litres.
Anyone who didn't clean theirs I suggest you do it, just follow the guidance in the maintenance section.
Thanks guys for all advices :y
