This is serious me thinks!
« on: 30 July 2009, 20:53:07 »

Started car this evening (1994 2.5V6 CDX Auto 64K miles) got about 10 yards and a God almighty rattle bang wallop from engine and it died. Kinda knew it would be impossible to restart but tried any way. Tries to turn over but sounds `weird` like not enough `umpff`to turn it over. Could this be timing belt and am I stuffed?

You might need to give a bit more detail for the experts to help you :)

Can you see anything obvious under the bonnet thats broke? I would imagine if the cambelt there would be bits on the ground and in the engine bay.

Got a receipt in the paperwork for a "Timing belt kit + labour" changed at 48658 miles, which is only 16K ago....(if it was done off course). So if the belt has "gone" has the engine also "gone". If so any one want the whole car?

I bet it was over 4 years ago. Its difficult to say if the belt or tensioners have gone without looking but as a guess I would say they have :(

Maybe only 16K ago, but how many years ago?

ooh thats a bit harsh, cambelt/tensioners should be replaced every 40000 miles or 4 years whichever comes first. :'(

If your going to do the work yourself I would say about £200-£250 but if you want someone to do it, lots and lots :(

The cam belt breaking will mean that the pistons have had an intimate meeting with the valves and will almost certainly mean a top end rebuild with new valves and head gasket set, new belt and tensioners poss valve guides and of course all the associated seals and bits and bobs. But the upside is that you are not too far from Marksdtm in nottinham who is the man for your problem as i am almost pos that he wil have some refurbed heads to go straight on.

thats if the timing belt has gone without knacking anything else, you might need new Valves and head gaskets, worst case.
