Guys, is there anyway of removing the breather box on the back of the engine (drivers side on to which two of the breather pipes are connected) without taking out the engine? I have done a full breather clean including poking around in the holes in that box but I'm convinced it is still clogged up inside. I can blow into it but it still seems restricted.

I'd say it's OK.

If you're concerned, blow some carb cleaner into it. It could probably be removed with the plenum and scuttle off but I'd say as it's not blocked it'll be OK.

Pictures of my 94 2.5 taken 6 years ago. I found that the breather was so caked up that I couldn't clean it out even with it off the engine.






The aluminium lump to the left of the picture is the crankase breather / oil seperator. Mine was totally clogged with solidified oil & sludge. I spent a day trying to clean it but I eventually gave up and bought a new one.....

So Andy, I assume you are saying you can't remove it with the engine in situ? I have had the plenum and scuttle off to do the cleaners but couldnt see any way of removing it. What holds it on?

By the look of the second above picture, i would say 4 bolts .

4no 6mm bolts on the two flanges. They were a bit grubby when I took the photo but you can see all of them in the second photo.

I hadn't noticed it was even there until I took the head off

It is probably a bit close to the bulkhead but I would expect it to come out easily enough. You might need to take the wiper motor out to get to it, it is dark I raining right now otherwise I would go & have a look.

Thanks Andy. I'll have another look, think the bolts may be difficult if not impossible, with the head/camcovers on. Is there a gasket/sealant under the flange?

 is it worth, running the engine with breather pipes removed and see/feel if there is any air pressure escaping? If there is i would leave it be.

If you do remove it, i hope you have a magnet on a stick esp when re fitting, suspect it may be a pita getting the bolts back in on in board side.

That'a a good idea Chris. I'll give it a try and hope oil mist doesn't spray everywhere!

Yes you can remove it with the motor still in place. You might need to bend the exhaust shield out slightly so you can get socket on it.

Use a 1/4 drive socket and extension with a magnet so you don't drop the bolts.

Be very carefull once you have removed the breath as the crank case will be open so cover the hole with some shop towel.

if you have got the tooling you can remove the cover on the breather and clean the inside out, i'll take some pics of mine when i get a chance

As Kevin says, give it lashings of carb cleaner but make sure you change your oil and filter afterwards
