Engine fires up, then dies

I have a Omega CDX 2.6 Y reg. I turn the ignition on, the engine fires, then dies.
Pumping the accelorator has no effect.
No codes show up on the diaganostics.
Both coil packs have been changed in the last six months. Anything I should be looking for?

Whats your oil like ? Does it have water or is it off colour?

This was the only way i knew that my Head Gasket blew on my last car

My old 2.5 did this, it would rev up no probs, but not idle.

Found it to be a vacuum leak at the join from the icv to the plenum.
Mine did have a throttle cable and the 2.6 has a dbw system iirc.

A vacuum leak would be my guess, but due to the electronics concerned i'm really stumped.

There's no oil in the header tank. As LSG1 says the head gasket is rare on the 2.6. Back in November my oil cooler went. This was wrongly diagnosed by the RAC as the head gasket!
I'll look for a vacuum leak and check the crank sensor and get back to you. Thanks for your help so far.

I've checked the vacuum pipes, can't find any leaks.
How do I check the crank sensor? Should a code come up if it's faulty?
I don't want to buy a new sensor and find I've still got the problem. My mechanic friend is completely stumped.

Put the new crankcase sensor on this morning, after being sent the wrong one. Sods Law.
Hasn't made any difference. Starts first time, revs for a couple of seconds then dies.  Where do I go from here?

I've taken out the new crank sensor and its smeared with oil.
Could my crank shaft oil seal have gone? I have noticed opil consumption has gone up recently.
How big  job is it replacing the oil seal? Is there a how to on the site?

I know this might sound daft, but have you checked to see if you have a constant supply of fuel,it could be something as simple as a blocked fuel filter---JK

I would think fuel also. Had a similar fault after I had  the car jacked up on the drivers side while low on fuel. Started up but cut out almost straight away. Display still showed 40 miles but once the car was off the jack it took a couple of goes but it started fine.
Would check fuel supply to manifold first.

Well my Omega has been off the road now for a month. I've replaced the crank sensor twice, but still the same problem. It fires up, revs then dies. This is becoming an expensive pastime
Somebody has suggested it could be the air flow mass meter. Could this be the reason it keeps stalling?
Any suggestions where I could get a good, but cheap one from. I'd hate to spend another £100.00 and find I'm no further forward

are you using the pedal trick to check codes?
Try unpluging maf and start car. It will revert to default map if maf not present. Should run but with restricted performance. If no change then not maf issue.

Same problem I had earlier this year with a Y reg 2.6 - It was the mass airflow sensor @ around £130.  Problem started with poor starting - had to keep engine chugging  long enough to warm it up - Less of a problem once hot (or when I switched over to LPG after 5 mins) Been fine ever since.
