Xenons on mini-facelift
« on: 03 August 2009, 18:31:38 »

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've done a search and couldn't find anything. I have a 98 CD which is minifacelift and would like to swap the projectors for the xenons. Are all xenons HID and what will need to be done to do this swap legally? Could you get Xenons on the mini-facelift because the only ones I've seen them on are facelift cars.

Xenon's were available on the mini facelift. However, I do believe it's a lot of work to change from halogen to Xenon, you'd obviously need new lights and a modded loom. But level sensors on some parts of the rear suspension, headlight washers and a new headlight switch on the dash are also needed. I suppose the best way would be to find a mini facelift with xenon's and strip everything you need from it. I'm afraid I don't know much more, mine had xenon's from the factory so don't know much about retrofitting. Someone will have more information I'm sure.

Legally, 3 things need to be in place to use HIDs in UK:

Lens must be approved for HIDs - using headlight units from a HID equipped car will ensure this. HID upgrade kits from egay won't.

Headlight levelling. Elites have suspension levelling (assuming still functional), or use the ECU controlled HID levelling system fitted to HID equipped cars.

Washing system.

Firstly, you need to sort out the auto levelling levelling (factory fit ones use an ecu controlled system with sensors on suspension arms).

Then the washing system, fairly simple.

These prerequisites are demanded by DfT and rightly so - we've all been blinded by poorly set up HID cars.

Then you can simply connect up the 12v from headlight switch to the lights.
