You need to come take it off my Omega first! I dont really have the tool collection to take it off myself, but if you want one, in what seems good condition, and you are near Wilts/Somerset, send me a PM and we can work out the details.

I will even help you remove it (if i can!)

All you need is a couple of 17mm spanners and I think its a 13mm one

Running great mate! Checked the oil and water again this morning and both perfect.

Kevin got the tech 2 on it and the only problems now are

1) the HID lamps, was low volts from the leveling motors and it wouldnt move the lamps up and down, said to repair the fault first heh. Am sorting out some replacement headlamps and hopefully that will fix.

2) Alarm and Powersounder came up as open circuit, so disconnected? I took a look under the scuttle but couldnt see anything amiss, mind you, not sure what i was looking for!

3) rear blind has broke, so need a new arm on it that holds the blind up, not a priority though.

Hows the engine rebuild going? You sort your Astra yet?

Good to hear it's running well, it certainly sounded nice. Any change in fuel economy since we corrected the cambelt being one tooth out?

To be honest I've done nothing with the Astra. I've been so busy with work, my voluntary commitments, and car servicing, I've not had chance - I just keep firing the oil into it and driving it

fuel consumption is about 20% better! I got 32mpg on a run down to Kevins, which isnt too bad at all, thats with some traffic as well.

I had a bit of an arguement with my old man about the cam belt. He had an Omega a few years back and the belt went. It was a 2.5 and he replaced the valves and put a new belt on, but he said you dont need the locking tool! I asked him why and he said you just have to align it up  , perhaps you can explain to me more why you need the tool so i can explain to him!!

He's right with most engines, however, The Omega V6 is pretty unique, in that the idlers for each bank, are concentric.

This basically means they have to be set in a certain position, and each idler has an effect on the timing of it's relative bank of cams.

You cannot set them in the correct positions, and measure the correct timing, without the setting kit.

Most engines, you just line up the marks and off you go - but these are a bit different

Get a copy of the cambelt DVD from the shop.  Best explanation and £3/4  you will ever spend.  Dont say a word to him and judt let him watch.

The timing marks are based on no1 piston being at top dead centre. The valves for no1 piston will therefore be closed but with a V6 some of the valves in some of the other cylinders will be part open.

The springs on the part open valves apply a considerable force that tries to rotate the camshafts. If you take the cambelt off without locking the camshafts the camshafts will rotate until the spring forces balance.

Valve to piston contact might not occur when the belt comes off but it is more likely when you are wrestling the cams back to their correct positions.
