If the only thing the belt touches are the sprockets and tensioners then they have to be the cause.

The sprockets are bolted to the crank and camshafts so won't become misaligned unless serious damage occurs to the crank or camshafts. The tensioners have small bearings inside that wear and allow the tensioners to wander. The safest thing is to fit a cambelt kit (cambelt and new tensioners) every time a new cambelt is fitted.

You could try dropping andyc a PM (including VIN or engine number, as there's more than 1 possible belt/kit).  He may be able to get a TC-priced kit in the post to you.  ;)

The cam locking kit for a 2.0 is just one piece. Try the link below, 4th item down!

http://www.incarshop.co.uk/acatalog/Camshaft_Locking_Tools.html

Simply align the top two pulleys and insert tool, them set tdc on bottom pulley and refit belt!!  :y

That sounds about right.  In the fifth picture, of the cam sprockets, the belt looks rather loose in between the two.

I didn't even know there was a locking kit for the 4-pot; what does it look like, anyone?

like that at a guess.

clicky

Nope that one is for a 1.4/1.6 model not a 2.0.

for locking twin camshafts on GM (Vauxhall/Opel) Ecotec 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2L 16 valve engines fitted to Astra, Cavalier, Calibra, Vectra, Omega, Sintra and Frontera models. Manufactured from tough nylon.

I didn't think it looked quite right but then I've only seen V6 ones in the metal.

4pot cam locks are £5 plastic wedges. It is possible to do it without the camlock wedge, but for sake of a fiver, not recommended.

(v6 one most definately does need the locking kit - the v6 cambelt cannot be properly timed without it!)

well i have brought a genuine cambelt kit just got to pick it up on tuesday am. £69 is that about right for a GM one?

The only thing i havent got is the cam locking tool but i am hoping the motor factors in town might have one thats where i brought the one for my rover. fingers crossed they do.

oh and a E10 mine seems to have grown legs and walked with my E11. :( 8m socket should do it i hope) thats if the bottom pully wants to play ball gave uptoday as it was lashin it down and the last thing i need is a cold for my sisters wedding!

Check the water pump for play.....looks like it might be a bit loose and hence the belt is riding against the outer flange.

The locking tool is about a fiver for one of these.....it can be done without if your careful (not a precise setup like the V6 one!)
