Look what i found today........now what do i do???
« on: 02 August 2009, 14:49:40 »

well i thought i would give my car a service today ( it needs it) well when i had the bonnet up and the engine running i could hear a rubbing noise. well any how i decided that i would do the service. well it was still doing after i finished servicing the car so i whipped the cambelt cover off..........................bl@@dy good job i did  :'( :'( :'(

Now as you can see i think i have alined the cams up with the right marks.  There is no rubbing marks on the cambelt cover. so i dunno what its rubing on. but i measured the old belt 19.3mm and the one i have just brought from halfords is 23mm IIRC.

Now for my issue i havent got a cam locking tool. hubby is moaning he needs the car but i have it in peices to prevent him using it as i dont want the belt snapping ( their are at least 2 splits in it about 2/3mm) which i noticed when i hand cranked the engine over to align the cams. i need the car for long distance buy sunday at the latest.

what the f$*K is it rubbing on ?????????? and what the hell should i do?????????

HELP plz    :'( :'( :'(

forgot to add the belt was only done feb2007 and has only done 20,000 miles

Pretty much impossible to safely time correctly without the locking kit I believe I'm right in saying...

Looking at the 3rd pic down it looks like the front edge of the belt is rubbing on the toothed cog left of the tensioner. Is there any adjustment to pull it back a touch?

i thought the belt had to be flush with the edge but i can see what you mean.

i have just ran the engine with the cover off to find the noise still their and the belt is moving back and forth on the tensioner meaning is slack on the right roller too. is it possible the tension ins wrong?

I've seen a 2.0 cambelt been done without a locking tool. Best bet is to get two mole grips really tight on the sprocket bolts and have someone hold them firmly while you put the belt on.

personally i dont like that idea .........sorry was advised to cut the other belt in half in situe and then slide the new belt on then cut the rest of the old belt off.

but their is no piont in puttin a new belt on if its going to keep rubbing  :'(

I'll go with that. On the cover it looks like most of the cr@p on the cover is around where the water pump is.

it seams to be the only thing it can be rubbing on!
however i still have to remove the bottom pully to double check what nick has sugested but the good old british weath has stopped me doing that as its throwing it down v bad!!! its bouncing and inch off the floor!!!!!!
and i cant get the car to the garage as hubby has put the trailer in the way and has removed one if its wheels.  :'( :'( :'(

so if it is rubbing on this it must have slackened to slide surely????????????

hubby said hes ready to burn the bl@@dy thing out i can see his point  :-X still glad i found it just peeved off with myself for not being able to fix it!!!!!!!!!!

If the timing is right to start with, then there shouldn't be any problem replacing the belt without a locking device. If you rotate the cranskshaft pulley clockwise, the right hand belt section is in tension, no tensioners in the way, I believe this is the way it runs when going. If you slacken the tensioner, I doubt the belt will move much, its very stiff, the timing points will still be aligned. It would have to move about 10mm to be one tooth out. So there shouldn't be a problem changing the belt without a lock. I haven't used one yet.

If the belt seems to be moving about, is it possible that one of the pulley/tensioner bearings are stuffed, allowing the pulley to bend from the perpendicular, and hence twisting the belt off its normal direction of travel. If the pulleys are all exactly parallel to one another the belt shouldn't move backwards and forwards on the  pulley.

If the only thing the belt touches are the sprockets and tensioners then they have to be the cause.

The sprockets are bolted to the crank and camshafts so won't become misaligned unless serious damage occurs to the crank or camshafts. The tensioners have small bearings inside that wear and allow the tensioners to wander. The safest thing is to fit a cambelt kit (cambelt and new tensioners) every time a new cambelt is fitted.

on further investigation it looks like (i think) the tensioner has had it or its loosened it self if thats possible. its a genuine VX part too so proper peved off!!!!

the reason i think this is the belt is slack then it slackens off even more then goes less slack this is allowing it to move back and forth on the tensioner and roller. thus allowing it to rub!!!!!!

That sounds about right.  In the fifth picture, of the cam sprockets, the belt looks rather loose in between the two.

I didn't even know there was a locking kit for the 4-pot; what does it look like, anyone?
