I did Islam at school (yet very little Christianity).

Now this is where my understanding of Islam lets me down - so any Muslims, if I offend in this post, I apologise for my ignorance.

From what I can gather, Mohammed was the name chosen by the Islamic children? I know enough Muslims to know Mohammed is a very popular name given to arabic boys, yet that is not considered an insult to the Prophet?  I fail to understand why giving the bear a common Islamic name has caused so much turmoil?

Or is it simply that the teacher in question is a non-Muslim, hence must be the enemy in a lot of Muslims' eyes?

I think you can call a person mohammed & thats ok, but you cannot name an object mohammed as it is offensive in so much as the prophet mohammed is depicted as an image. The prophet mohammed is worshiped & held in such high esteem it is blasphemous to create an image or object & claim it to be the prophet mohammed,that is why there were all those riots not so long ago as the prophet had beed depicted in those infamous cartoons . As a foot note there is another row brewing because someone has named a bear Adam & Adam is the first prophet of Islam, which is frowned upon as a Bear is seen as an aggressive & dangerous creature & the prophets are not

Exactly..Too many people have this name..And not only arabic boys, too many muslim people in any country even in USA have this name also..For seperating this names from the prophets name is a name prefix.."Hz."

When you include the prefix this means you are talking about the prophet.. But as far I understand The Sudanese government have a physcology that people from other religions try to degrade them..Or they have other things in the mind..Whatever it is, this is real "stupidty".

These prefixes may differ from language to language..But must exist..

from what i read in the papers yesterday its all down to a vindictive and spiteful school secetary called sarah kharward who holds a grudge against the teacher and it was she who apparantly reported it to the authorites in sudan against the schools wishes who had i belive tried to deal with it in house..it goes to show ya that no matter who you think is your friend or work colleague someone will stab ya in the back for some reason or another....
