auto box trouble
« on: 10 August 2009, 17:18:21 »

Having problems with the auto box, it keeps slipping into neutral instead of selecting a higher gear. It doesn`t happen often, but is annoying. Any ideas on possible problems or how to get sorted. thanks.

when was the oil last changed?
have a look and a smell will give you some clues
if the oil is dirty and smells a fluid change MIGHT cure it

Drop the sumps (there are two), but watch out they hold 4 to 5 litres of very smelly (if old) ATF, check for other broken pieces. The filter is held in with three bolts, take out and clean, also clean magnet in the bottom of the sump.
Clean all the bits and put it back together and fill with new Dexron 3.
Or you could just check level and top up !!

needs interigateing for fault codes via tech2 or similar code reader. Wonder if break band related, either slipped or needs adjusting? Does it miss on any particular gear? 3rd for instance?

Mine 'flared' between 2&3 only, fitted second-hand solenoid '2to3' and gave the sumps a good clean out, all very good again.
First thing check fluid is at the correct level, then if problem is still there change fluid, this is the cheap way to go.

Ok, not specific enough, would agree change atf and see. Esp, if any previous thumping or banging when selecting gears.

Is thumping or banging when selecting gears a typical problem that occurs when the fluid needs topping up??
