Good news! I've done the cam cover gaskets and cleaned the breathers. All went back together ok

However, Mig is still misfiring. It's better, on a road test it was actually driveable but I did lose power once briefly and on coasting to a stop it died. I double checked everything was connected and put back on so nothing has been left off.

Was a bit of a smoky start but after that all was well, til it started misfiring again. As I say, on a road test the throttle actually did something straight away, whereas before I could put my foot down and there would be nothing.

Whats up now?!  :-/

Paperclip it, see if there's any codes?

Could be the DIS pack and/ or leads, as a result of the CC gaskets...

Don't know why I didn't think of paperclipping it...

73 and 74. 74 is one I've had before, 73 showed its face just before I did the cam covers. Thats the only two there apart from 31 obviously.

I'm not sure really. I take it the only way of testing the leads and DIS pack is by substitution of known good components? No other way?

Bit disappointed now  :-/

If its missfiring at idle and dying when slowing down it could be the idle control valve is faulty. Pretty easy to test if it is and a 5 minute job to change

How is the ICV tested?

It misfires with revs too but it is mainly at idle

hi , ive had spark plug break down, after being in oil like when the cc gaskets fill the holes, it seems to clear up after about 2000rpm if this is the case, usually lasts less than about 3-5 seconds and only happens every now and then. took me ages to find on a 3.0 24v. the gaskets on it only seeped and took about a year to fill the plug holes, but after the first time i found it i knew when to change the plugs every time, did do the gaskets in the end but a new set of plugs every year for the first five years was much less work!

I've changed the plugs as well. I thought where the old ones had been sat in so much oil it can't have done them any good so got some Genuine GM twin electrode ones and  replaced before I put the plenum back on.

So DIS pack seems likely? I'm going to burn this car 

How much and where from?

I did clean the IACV when I did the breathers but as I say, not sure how they are tested.

if you did the plugs i assume u did the leads or have you got the plug top dis packs on it

I didn't change the leads but I cleaned up the oil that was on them.

   The Dis pack can be sourced either on here for a good s/h one or eBay for a new one but there are 3 different types .

  As for the leads if you're a member of the Autobahnstormers you can have a set made up for approx. £35 delivered, good quality as well .

 If your not a member then think about joining, costs £20 a year and you get a trade card for which you can get big savings at a dealer

Possibly still leads and/or DIS pack but...

Went to remove DIS pack today so I know which one it is. Got half way there and no matter what I tried I just couldn't get anything on the bolts so I gave up.

All back together and I noticed that at first (cold engine) it idles fine, slightly fast which I think is normal with SAI anyway. As it warms up it starts to get lumpy. Anyway I left it running and went to wash my hands and on returning I find it idling nice and smooth. Blip the throttle and on returning to idle starts to run rough again.

Anyway, I have no more money this month to spend on it or anything else for that matter so will have to wait til payday. Just thought that todays observations may shed some more light on what is the problem.

I suspect that this is going to be something really really simple a DOH moment as Homer would say.

If the plugs/leads/DIS system was duff then it wouldn't start when cold as you describe.

Is it possible that you have disturbed the connection to a sensor which would be giving the ECU a false reading as the engine warms up.

Well worth a check.
