What's draining my battery ?
« on: 03 September 2009, 14:36:44 »

('00 2.5 facelift) I realise that this is a ****ing stoopid question, but I'm at my wits end.

It's a fairly new, quality, battery but just recently all the charge drains away within a week of non-use. I can't see any lights or the radio on. I do have a tracker, but that's been installed for a while with no problem.

What else could be draining the battery ?

Thanks.

Have you checked the light in the boot? or if you have one under the bonnet?
try taking them out and and see if that helps.

Have you checked interior lights, many a time my kids have left a rear light on and unless you watch the lights fade out when u lock it u may miss them, especially during the day, go out and check it when its dark (sorry to be so obvious, but u never know!!! :D)

There might be some helpful info. Here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1225724099

Basically, I would make sure the battery is in good condition and being charged first, then check Quiescent current to identify if anything's draining it.

Thanks for the suggestion and especially Kevin for an excellent link.

Charged the battery overnight, and did all the tests in the link. Passed all the voltage tests - it was charging OK and all within the limits. Did the leakage test and that was OK too - about 60mA.

So drove 10 miles, stopped 5 mins and everything OK. Drove another 1 mile and stopped half an hour and battery power was very low again. Did the leakage test and was taking 500mA.

Called the RAC, and the mechanic did all the same tests and said it looked OK, then used a piece of test kit and declared the battery dead. Replaced it (under warranty from the last one they replaced) and it's still OK this morning.

Not sure what all this means.

i had the same problem after i fitted an after market stereo, also might be worth checking if your ign light has a feint glow when ign is off [best checked in the dark] just in case your alternator diode pack is iffy :y

After market stereos often have the main and standby 12v feeds the opposite way round on the ISO connector so the pins need swapping before the stereo will power down when the ignition is turned off.

500mA sounds rather high. Are you sure the car had been left long enough for the accessory timer to cut out?

just to add if you have changed the head unit & its a cheapie then even if you swap the battery live & the switched live it can still drain the battery as it happened to me :'(

Never played with a 2.2 diesel, but this pops up sometimes on the Mig BMW 2.5TD, have a look here.

I have been having a bit of trouble with my glovebox lid - I wonder if maybe it hasn't been closed properly ? Couldn't see (in the dark last night) how the light operates.
