Exhaust fitting tips
« on: 07 September 2009, 19:52:43 »

Right well, continuing work on the Elite. Managed to change cats and droplinks today.

With the rest of the exhaust, does anyone have any tips for fitting? It doesn't seem a very good fit where the middle pipe joins the cat, it is sort of trumpeted but the cat flange doesn't sit in the 'trumpet' very well. Also, with the paste, any tips for making sure it is nicely sealed? It's a bit difficult to get to the top of the join when lying under the car.

Same again for the middle to rear joint. Where does the paste go and how tight to clamp it up?

Thanks

Don't be afraid to give it a gentle tap of friendly persuasion - I did it with the zorst in all one piece - popped the back box into the rear hangers, then supported the weight with a jack while wiggling it into the other mounts.

Thanks for that.

Another question. The cats are threaded. Now on the old ones, someone had stripped that thread and so replaced with bolts, washers and nuts that went straight through. On the cats that have gone on, the thread is intact and so these bolts will not fit. What kind of bolt is the OE one as I can see the OE bolt screwing into the cat but then there is no where on the flange on the middle box to accept it. That just has an elongated oval hole (aftermarket middle section)

Do the OE bolts have the springs or is it just a screw as I think it is.

just bolts straight in Toby. Not much more to it than that. You may find a smaller diameter nut and bolt to go all the way through the whole to be easier if you have any spare ones. Or drill the cat out further to accept the old ones you have. Usually need to buy new bolts(would not fit in your case as already drilled), clamps and rubbers as well as pipe work.

Sorry just if read, new cats. So yes just bolts needed. Dont think they are anything special.

You might find it easier to drill the threads out and use some decent-sized and strength nuts and bolts again - makes removal far easier if it needs to come off in the future.

Speaking from experience of swapping my 3.0's exhaust in under an hour, and spending four hours on my 2.6 drilling out said broken stud and thread...

The thought of drilling them out did cross my mind.

However, what I meant was that while the new cats have a thread, I believe the screw to be just that, with no bolt. This means that it wouldn't actually screw into the middle box. So not sure if getting the proper bolts from VX is going to help.

Any suggestions?

I hate using non OEM fixings as I never know what size I need.
