can i use diesel oil in my v6 petrol, it will only be for a couple of months at a time, as i can get diesel oil for free.

petrol explodes, diesel just burns. Diesel oil is designed to collect soot generated by diesel, with petrol there is no soot. (well not as much as diesel anyway)

Just buy petrol oil its not exactly expensive from Vx at £9 for 5L

Is this diesel oil intended for diesel engines with catalytic converters, if it is then its probably okay for petrol engines too, but if its not okay for cat diesels then I would say its not suitable for cat petrol engines either.  None cat oils contain ZDP as a friction modifier and this can eventually poison the cat.

I use VX recommended semi 10w-40 in my TD, the same stuff most of you put in you petrol engines. Should I be using a diesel oil?

my mate drive on diesel oil,  vw passat 1.8t petrol for last 10 year and  run perfect never had any problems with engine 
if you change your oil every 5-6k miles dont make different what oil use

Castrol GTX Diesel complies with ACEA A3 as well as B3, which means that it meets the requirement for GM petrol engines too.

The only real difference is likely to be the detergent additives that are added to the oil (the main difference being mostly marketing, of course).

If the engine has shown signs of neglect to oil changes in the past (e.g. manufacturer's recommended intervals ) I would recommend a couple of quick changes at 1000 mile intervals in case too much sludge gets loosened by the detergents but then I'd say use it.

I would, if I had a free supply of it.

Heard very bad thing on Castrol oils from many mechanics in the last 10 years.

Yeah - I was suprised when I was handed the same oil across the counter when I switched from TD to V6.

I'd to buy oil at the motorway services yesterday as the low oil level warning came on a couple of times on long slow inclines - caravan on tow! Castrol was all they had  :-? and it was as expensive as a gallon on Vauxhall's oil on TC ....... still cheaper than another engine though
