Why is my battery light on when ignition is off an
« on: 12 September 2009, 23:51:52 »

Hi, this is my first post so bear with me! I've got a 99V mini facelift 2.5 V6 CDX. It's developed an interesting problem today, when I stop the engine the battery light comes on, it stays on when I remove the key, also the information display stays on as well. When I put the key back in and turn it to start the engine all the normal lights come on but the battery light goes out! It's running ok and the light doesn't come on when driving! I'm very confused! Please help! :-/ :-/

Sounds like diode is faulty "backfeeding" to ignition. I`d suggest renewing the regulator after carefully checking all wires and connections in the area of the alternator.

Most definately the diode pack on the alternator, either get it re-conn'ed or get a replacement. It'll drain your battery over a very short period if not fixed soon.

Bl***y car! Disconnected the battery last night so it wouldn't go flat, put it back on this morning and lo and behold battery light on without key. Attempted to start it and it wound over til the battery was almost flat then kicked into life, with the battery light on now but dimly. Revved the engine and the battery light got brighter, tickover it was dim. Now the light goes out and stays out with the engine off but comes on when running, gets brighter when revved and dim at tickover. Just done voltage check and it's putting out 12.6v at 3000rpm, so the bloody alternator has gone from diode to dead overnight!!!!  >:(

Whip the alternator off, read the link in my above post, you might get lucky with a DIY re-furb, if not regulators are about £10-15.
