Can you test the voltage at the battery at all , the other thing to check are the earth connections to the car body . May be worth checking the battery terminals just in case  :y

electric guys should come to the rescue but i would think its a earth fault have you tried running a seperate earth  from the alternator i recently had trouble with mine and got expert advice it ended up after fitting new alternator it was the cable at the battery that needed recrimping

This wire often gets hot because the crimp into the battery terminal has become loose. Is this the case here?

The fix is to obtain a terminal with a screw clamp for the cable and re-make the conenction to the battery positive terminal - or replace the whole cable assembly with terminal.

it was my problem kevin after buying new alternator and having it fitted mechanic who origionaly said cable was ok found out that it was not after charge was still same at 13 volt grrrrr but i have new alternator on now mind he did say shall i take new one of and replace your old one but i thought possibly false economy but wish he would have checked more carefully i would take extra care with that cable if your charging rate is down
