Wet floor, scuttle drain etc
« on: 19 May 2008, 20:31:07 »

I have got loads of water under the carpet, its all soaked into the soundproofing.  I have read threads about this and checked the scuttle drain.  There was no water in there but the drain was blocked.  Also where the cables go through to the car higher up to the right of the scuttle, the grommit has got a cable going through the hole by the side of the grommit pulling it away from the side.  I cant get this to seal properly so have stuck loads of gaffa tape round it to stop any water getting down there.

Now I have soaking wet soundproofing that I can't seem to get dry as it is so absorbant!  I am leaving the windows and sunroof slightly open all day with the soundproofing and carpets held up with screwdrivers etc but its still not drying out like I hoped.  Is there an easier way of getting the soundproofing dry?  It's the front and the back passenger sides.

Also I don't understand how the scuttle drain being blocked can cause wet carpets, where does the water come in from, pollen filter?  Could the water be coming from anywhere else?  I have already checked the sunroof drains and they drain to the sills on both sides so think they are ok.

Cheers,

Richard

It comes in via pollen filter, and fan assembly.

Obviously, water can also get in if holes around door seal, windscreen, rust holes etc

I had the problem ob 2 accounts
1) Driving into flood water in July 2007
2) Blocked Sun-Roof drains

What you need is a couple of weeks of hot weather when you can leave the car with everything open all day, assuming that you have found & resolved the cause of the ingress to start off with
Bon chance!

Only way to dry it out properly is to lift the carpets and cut out the sound proofing material, it's soaks it up like a sponge the replace when dry.
Becareful though the wiring runs under the carpet in the passenger side footwell.
BTW your scuttle drain away must have been blocked at sometime and slowly drained away, have you recently washed the car for it to fill up again, last heavy rain we had was about 10 days ago around here.

Yes, I forgot that I used one of these as well. It extracted a couple of gallons, but ensure that you remove the filter before using it because it will go soggy & prevent block the vaccuum.

Well the rear of the cr has dried out nicely now, but the front still holding quite a bit of water in the sound proofing.  I'm hoping we have some more nice weather to try and get it totally dry next week as having the carpets all propped up is very impractical!  Im also thinking about exactly where this water came from...  Where does the condensation from the air conditioning system go to?  Should there be a pipe under the car somewhere?  I am now trying to find any possible cause of water coming in so I can get them all checked.

Run some water over the passenger side windscreen, you should see it run out from under the car onto the drive.
If it doesn't then your scuttle drain is blocked.
Like I said if it doesn't dry out in the car then cut out all of the sound proofing and dry it out of the car.

I have this exact problem, the water is not coolent, I suspect it's condensation from the air conditioning system, anyone know how this could have happened?

Thanks RobG!

I cleaned out the Scuttle drain a few months back when I first noticed the problem. I did not think this was the issue as I left the sprinkler on the car for around an hour prior to this and the amount of water in the passenger side footwells had not changed. I took the passenger seat out and dried the car over a few days in the summer then I drove to Austria and back in mid summer where there was very little rain but the problem remained.

When I took the passenger seat out I noticed that someone had been there before me and had apparently drilled a hole, or removed a plug from the rear nearside passenger footwell to allow water to drain, so I assumed this had been an issue for some time but had not been noticed as you have to squeeze the carpet to see the water come up through the holes that the mats fasten into.

The two tubes, under the car, which drain away condensation from the air conditioning system tend to deliver a steady trickle of water onto the road but I’ve noticed that at certain angles the flow seems to stop for a few seconds, I wondered if the flow was occasionally directed into the footwell.

The problem is that it will get wet soon again, without any rain as I suspect it's condensation from the air conditioning system.
