what is paperclip code 74 on a diesel, Ive only changed the alternator :( had to also trace a faulty earth wire but thats all sorted now. What else could I have done :-/
Did you start the engine with MAF disconnected? If so, may be a stored code that will go after a set number of 'clean starts'

Unfortunately, no way with paperclip to tell if its a stored code, or a current code.

I'm making an assumption that MAF is plugged in ;D - number of times I forgot to plug mine back in on my tractor, and only notice due to a very subtle difference in initial throttle response.

Mass Air Flow.  Just noticed your TD is a 94. U25DT engines (1994 and 1995) do not have MAFs, so ignore me....

no not listning the fault code is there is to many volts coming in to the ecu, its charging to good just needs a few good runs to settel it down again then the fault code will be gone.
Incorrect I'm afraid
Well just checked with m8 at garage drove it 20miles and the ECU light is not on now volts chargng at 13.5 insted of 16.5volt. :y you need amps not volts, to meany volts lowers the amps.

The voltage regulator on the back does what it says on the tin - regulates voltage

A voltage regulator is a voltage regulator, whether new or 2nd hand.  If it doesn't do its job, or is intermittent doing its job, its knackered  :'(
