I went to a car boot sale this morning, car was fine, been stopped there half an hour, went to start it, spinning over OK but would not fire. Tried locking/unlocking a few times, no joy. Tank was half full, I know I need a new pump for the tank sometime but never had a problem with at least 20 litres in the tank. drained a bit of Diesel out of the fuel filter, looked perfectly clean, no muck, no water. Undid the Banjo on top of the filter, & filled it up with Diesel. The engine coughed & spluttered into life, but then died, repeated this & it started, I nursed it to a filling station the other side of the road & filled up. This proved there was half a tank of Diesel in it. The car behaved itself all the way home, even when driven "briskly". I will be replacing the pump, but anyone suggest anything else? It points to fuel starvation, but never had any trouble before.
I fitted this filter not that long ago, I have also cleaned the filter in the tank. The Diesel has always been clean, and I have added Diesel Magic to both the tank and the filter in the past.
Oh, and you can't do the paperclip test on this model, or the pedal trick,

When you do get to do the lift pump, it'll probably just need the muck cleaned out of the pot and off the gauze filter rather than changing the whole thing. 
Did mine a few months back. One occasion recently I was down to 35 miles of fuel left on Range display and it started on the button.

Start at the tank Glen:
Remove the filler cap, and listen carefully to hear if the pump runs - it should run for a short while, while it 're-charges' the fuel system. It may however sound quieter than normal due to your tank now being full.
I'm also wondering if the 'ribbed' transfer pipe (base of pump swirl pot to outlet) could be the culprit. Might be difficult to ascertain though, again due to a full tank of fuel.

I have cleaned all the muck out,, it wasn't that bad though. The problem sounded like fuel starvaton, but I gave it a good blowout on the way home, and there was plenty of OOMPH for a Weasel.

I am sure the pump in the tank is either lazy, or not working. I want to replace it anyway though. I am just hoping I don't have something with an intermittant fault, a sensor or summat.

Yup, a good burn up clears out all the cobwebs, although it was running fine before this morning. Yes both from The Valleys, you must own 50% of the Migs in S Wales. Just have to run "The Enemy" to ths shop, at least it will prove it's still funning fine.

You should be okay Glen, it's usually associated with the in-tank gubbins.
It's more than likely that filling the tank has kick-started the pump back into action. Heard of this happening before.

If you have a replacement that is known to be working fine, then slap it in when you get a chance.
As for listening for the pump at the filler cap, not sure you'd hear anything. Couldn't on both pumps I have. They work fine, original was just well gummed up.
They have just a slight buzz when briefly connected to 12v to test before replacing. I'd say the damping effect of the diesel would make it less audible again.

Thanks Turk, I will have a listen when the level goes down a bit. I should have given the pump a proper test when I cleaned the filter.

Have you tried paperclip method, a significant proportion of TDs are paperclippable
