Airbag light
« on: 20 September 2009, 19:21:03 »

I'm picking up a 2.5 Elite at the end of the week (woohoo  :)) on a '98 S-plate. It has a couple of small niggles. The air bag light stays on and the display says "Low-beam something-or-other" although all lights work. Any ideas?

Apart from that I'm well chuffed - only 117k full history up to 110k, cambelt only 19k old, new oil cooler gasket (stainless) and body work/interior overall is excellent. Glad I chose it -especially at £750!

I'll give it a polish and post some pics up next weekend.

Both faults could ideally be diagnosed with a code reader of some sort.
Air bag faults could be just about anything.
Low beam field vision wot-sit could be one of the level sensors on the nearside suspension (front or rear) or either one of the head lights' level motors.
You need a code reader to find out what faults you have rather than guess.  :y  :y  :y

As said above. Any faults on the airbag system will need to be reset even when a new/known to be good item is substituted for the failed item. You can trigger the light by turning the ignition with part of the system disconnected ie side air bag sensor in the door while you're playing with other bits of the door electrical bits. The light would then come on .... and stay on when reconnected.  :(
Your tester was wrong. Air bag light being lit for test is NOT a reason for failure. My crappy Astra went through it's test with its light on and passed.

Airbag has never been replaced so would appear to be a sensor. When I get the car I'll get it checked out. I had this years ago on an Escort which turned out to be a loose conenction under the driver's seat.

That reminds me, are there any Tech2 owners in Norwich?

Is the airbag light one that comes on at startup? It's no longer illuminating but I don't know if it's because the fault has rectified itself (loose connection) or the bulb has blown. It doesn't light up when turning on the ignition.

They've probably removed the bulb to try and hide the fault!

Thanks for that. Still a trip to Vauxhall to get the airbag fault diagnosed then  :(

Even if there's no OOF member with a TechII local to you, there must be a local garage that can read the fault codes  for you cheaper than Vauxhall. A 'Cheapo Tech II' has read & reset airbag lights for me in the past.
