rough tick over
« on: 24 September 2009, 12:06:50 »

My 96' 3.0 MV6 started to run roughly on tick over. It manifests like this:

when the car is at stop, and the gas pedal is not pressed at all, one of the following is happening:
a) running at cca. 500 rpm, and running roughly and bumpy
b) running at cca 1400 rpm, no roughness

so, basically, it is either running rough, or it is running high on tick over.

also, if I remove my foot of the gas pedal, it sometimes starts to twitch (like misfire)...

the car has an LPG installation, if it makes any difference.

is it the same on both fuels? Lpg being harder to ignite, may give us a clue.
High rpm may suggest an air leak. Would clean and check tickover valve is seated propely and air tight.
Also pull some plug leads and check for oil in plug wells.

Yeah, be interested to know what this is, as mine does the same - rough tickover, misfiring slightly at 500 rpm but smooth if you press the gas over 1000 rpm. I haven't got the high tickover though

If its a poor quality lpg install, check the installers have NOT adjusted the throttle butterfly - this must be FULLY closed at idle, allowing the icv to do its job

good summary above..change all the gaskets under the plenum even if they seem undamaged..

clean idle air control valve (soak in thinner and let rest a few hrs) .. clean EGR using WD40..

renew the gasket for Idle a.c valve also and fit tightly..

buy a new breather (plastic ecotec bit-its cheap) cause when its old mostly they are clogged and its small gaskets tends to leak air..

also if you have chance take your injectors for sound cleaning.. and check their spray pattern..

change your fuel and air filters also..

I also estimate your idle is worse when the engine is cold..

ps: some may not agree but I found that 4 electrode NGK (not iridium) helps for the problem..

problem solved!

It was ICV. Took it off, spray some WD40 in it, let it dry of, ad put it back on.

It works like a clock now!

tnx for all the advice :y :y
