My Dilemna. sell, scrap or repair.
« on: 01 October 2009, 18:56:04 »

S reg Elite 3.o auto estate. I had a nasty moment when the steering linkage collapsed. I had clonked the kerb a few days earlier and the car was making unhealthy noises. Circumstances forced me to use it and I know I should not have. Anyhow, a broken steering arm, 2 bald rear tyres, leaky exhaust, a 3'' crack on rear alloy,(with slow leak)  and a broken wing mirror is a catalogue of woes. Tax ends end Oct Mot due in Nov. Any ideas what to do? How much to fix? Need wheel, mirror, steering bits, tyres etc. Dont know what else is damaged at the front. Dont know all the names of bits either. HELP!! Car is in Scottish Highlands.

The scrap value for a car taken to a scrap yard is about £180 if that helps. I towed one there after removing stuff for spares, stuff to sell etc ...

Its a hard decision to make sometimes but there are penty of saleable  things on one hand, but your location counts against you for heavy stuff.

Thanks for the replies. I rang the garage this morning and they had put it up on the ramp without me saying yes. Will I have to pay for the priviledge? It needs 2 new discs and pads and steering idler complete. The engine is sound, heater works, Bose hifi is great  mileage is 121,296--- I am clutching at straws.

Disks, pads, idler, labour, VAT - That sounds like the best part of £200 to be honest mate .........

Stayed over in Tain many times, also at the Morangie Hotel back in the '90s when Highland Fabs were going strong, great part of the world, your very lucky.
Regarding the Omega, yes even at 'trade club' the discs and pads are £100, so £200 all in would be a good deal, what can you buy of that  for 2,3or£400.
I have a 2.5 Elite which is now covering 1500 miles a
week (163k on the clock), it owes me nothing it is only worth something to me, so a few £'s on bits is not a problem.  :y

It's almost 12 years old.

I reckon if you found all those receipts (from the companies that have since gone pop) where you spent £1000's on it since you've had it, you'd make a lot more if it were to catch fire one night than what you would if you tried to sell it  ;)

Seeing as the car was given to me I think spending a few hundred on it is ok. I just hope it passes the MOT!  So can anyone point me to a suitable supplier of idler, discs and pads?
I will also need a wheel.  Time is of the essence.

Thanks to forum members Lincs Robert and Marky Mark I hope to get my BigMig back on the road. Found a new idler on ebay and discs and pads from Vauxparts. Killer is the carriage up to the Highlands.
The garage reckons the exhaust is sound.
What I need is a passenger mirror glass and backplate. Seems you get the glass alone or a whole mirror.

I am in London, so not very local to you, but can post you the mirror.
If you still need anything else I am (unfortunatelly) breaking my 1999 V6 CD, have std alloys with reasonable tyres and all other parts, the head gasket is blown and (I think) the head itself has deformed... The engine has done about 170K and probably is not worth repairing, but the rest of the car was in good condition and well maintained...

3.0 V6 omega's are exportable and worth a hell of alot more than the per ton rate!

when the scrappie hands you £100 for your omega hes making £350 profit on it! and doing absolutely nothing to it!

when i binned my omega i exported it through a friend in the scrap trade and got £450 for it more than it would of sold on eBay for lol :y

She's back on the road!!  I feel very relieved. I was looking at a loan to buy a tin box. I still have to sort out the wheel and 2 tyres. On the case there.
The garage has put the spare on and the mechanic has said it has caused the ABS and Traction control lights to stay on. I then drove home and noticed the speedo is not working. Rang Andy at Goodtreads and he reckons the problem is linked to the spare wheel being a different size. Does this add up?

I got the Idler from Vaux bits £19.00 and the discs and pads £103. £ 25 of which was carriage. Only £8.00 down there. We pay for the scenery.
Work was £78. Bang on my budget of £200. Thanks to all who have given me encouragement. I am so glad I joined this forum.
