Alarm going off when car locked – Powersounder ?
« on: 08 October 2009, 15:46:58 »

Hi there.
My dad has a Y plate (face lift model) Omega 2.2 Petrol Auto.  The alarm seems to keep going off now if the lock button on the keyfob is pressed once (just to lock) or twice (lock and set alarm).  It also does it if you lock with key in the door.  It appears to be random as to when it goes off, but it appears to do it less if we put the main car battery on charge.
The conclusion is that the internal batteries in the Power Sounder are on the way out.  On the facelift one I belive these are the Varta 3.6 V Memtec type and soldered onto the board in the power sounder (2 of them needed and hacksaw to open sounder).  If the pre facelift Omega the I believe the batteries are the button type.
Is this a sign of the Powersounder batteries on the way out if the alarm keep going off.  There are NO fault codes recorded and the alarm sets OK when it works.
Thanks in advance.
Andy.
P.S
Is there a way to set it with the car alarm and deadlocks on WITHOUT the power sounder going off !!  Opening the rear passenger door and locking manually by pressing pip on the drivers door works, but it doesn’t set the alarm or deadlock.

Yes. Disconnect the thing. Alarm will still be armed via the car battery

My car has just started doing the same thing a couple of days ago.
Where is the powersounder situated and is it just a case of snipping the wires and taping them up or does it have a plug to disconnect.

...snip... The alarm seems to keep going off now if the lock button on the keyfob is pressed once (just to lock) or twice (lock and set alarm)...snip...

Incorrect... press the button once locks the doors and sets the alarm.

Pressing it twice does the above then deadlocks the car.

Only way you can lock the doors without the alarm setting is to reach round from the drivers side rear door and pushing the button down on the drivers door, then shutting the rear door. All powersounders are the same and use 2 x Varta (N3H170 NI-MH 3.6v 170mAh Button Cell) which are very hard to source. Then of course you have to cut the powersounder open to gain access to them, it is then almost impossible to re-seal them completely. HTH :y

I looked for the alternative model to N3h170 battery.  Found this link it might help it has some ideas of different areas to source the equivalent http://www.budgetbatteries.co.uk/20940/3-v150h-size-mempac-nimh-3-6v-150mah-varta-rechargeable-memory-protection-battery-pcb-mount/
which seems to be this model 3/V150H
here is the info where i found out about it.

Company: Varta Microbattery        Code: 3/V150H/4P

Description: One of the popular Varta MEMPAC RANGE . This is a special variant used in some Astra Alarms. The battery has a 4 pin arrangement with a 8mm distance between the two negatives and a 10 mm pitch between the two positives.

Application: 3v150h/p, 3v150hp, 3V100R,3/v150h/4P, 3/V100R/4P, 3/V110R/4P, 3/V110H/4P, N3H170

in all likelyhood its the power sounder, but to be belt and braces, press the internal alarm disable button on the dash every time you get out of the car,  it will disable the internal sensors. If it still goes off, tape down the bonnet switch or un plug it. If it still goes off will be powersounder. Unplug it, or replace or solder new batterys if the circuit board has not been eaten by battery acid. This is known to cause fires on very rare occassions.

Also, thinking about it, depends if your getting the horn(not the car horn but the alarm horn located next to p.sounder) or the siren, which is the power sounder, which is there as a back up if a thief has disconnected the car battery, hence its own power source.(in other words, if your getting the siren its the p.sounder if your getting the alarm horn the alarm has been tripped)

Thats my understanding anyway. Please correct me if its not the case. Hth

also, just for info, my power sounder only ever went off on start up, and only if the car had stood for a couple of days.

This was thought to be the car battery being past its best. Theory being the power sounder was seeing a drop in voltage when when cranking due to the poor battery state and thinking that the battery was being disconnected and hence tripping the alarm.

Just for info like. :-)

Thanks all for advice - Looks like Power Sounder it is :(, but at least I know how to lock car now without setting it off !!

I had posted another message, but I may as well mention it here ---- It was is the Vectra power sounder compatible with the Omega one ?   I can get a 2005 power sounder from a Vectra, but wondered if it would fit the Omega - Saves the hastle of surgery and battery de/soldering !!

Thoughts ????

Thanks again,
Andy.

Not necessarilly, its not unknown for them to go off while driving. If your happy its the sounder i would suggest removal asap. Just unplug undo the nut and remove. Its possible to get at it by just undoing the torx drivers side and lifting the scuttle alone. Makes it more awkward though.

My power sounder has given up. But should I still be getting sound from the main horn when alarm triggered. All I get is hazard warning lights going off.
