are the ignition switches prone to wear, i think mine may be on its way out. there loads of play when i insert the key & i have to sometimes have a few attempts to start before it does. help pls

the switch dose wear out with a lot off stop and starts all the time, but the way you say it sound like the lock its self may need replacing, if the lock is locking the steering wheel you have been moving the steering wheel before turning the key as you can warp the pin if you dont, as you are putting to much fourse in turning the key.

The electrical contact part of the ignition switch can fail ,it is fairly simple to replace too .
 Have a search in the maintenance guide section on here for some help , Also the actual barrel can be replaced again check in the maintenance guide section I have replaced both of mune so it cant be that difficult to do

no but it will be a new key unless you can get the barrel fixed, i know some place's can fix them, but dont know for how much, if you get a new barrel you can still use the old key for the doors.
