What is the width of the boot, along the rear seat, in a saloon?

I'm sure you know why I'm asking   

I'd like to LPG the mig - but I'd like the biggest tank possible (not worried about storage space)..

i think you can squeeze the 100L tank in there, but its a very tight fit.

I'll be going upright donut in the spare wheel well if i get LPG....

I have just taken a complete conversion kit off a 2.5 v6 w reg. It had a tank complete with all mounting brackets that fits right up to the back of the seats and is the full width of the boot.
I have still got it in the garage. never got round to advertising it

A 100L will fit... Just! As long as you have no need to get into anything either side (e.g. sat nav unit on mini f/l) then it's fine.

If I fitted it again I'd remove the Bose shelf to get the tank in and mounted as you had to slide the frame and the tank in seperately and do a little jig to get them mated up again!

Fancy doing this myself now as i am keeping the beast,but dont fancy cutting an ugly hole in my bumper.Can you fit the filler cap inside the boot at all?

Not if you want to comply with COP11 (fitting standards) but you can fit it to a tow bar or behind the towing eye cover (I think)

My tank is 360mm diameter by about 890mm length (IIRC). 80 litres.

There is plenty of space above it. There is room for limited use of the hole behind the rear seats for carrying long bits of pipe, for example, so I would say that a 400mm diameter tank would go in without any problems (didn't you end up with a 400mm, Paul?).
 
there is a reasonable gap either side of the tank too. I would say you could go up to about 950 wide. I will have a measure up later to be certain, though. That will get you to 100 litres.

There will be more work involved in fitting it as the space gets tighter. I wonder if a larger tank frame would sit on the floor happily without modification, for one thing.

Probably worth making it a 4 hole tank at that size. They do fill very quickly given a decent pump. Unfortunately the cheapest pump round here is sloooow and I'm a tight wad.

I'm sure the 100L fits but it's tight.

Personally I'd just stick to 80L as the mounting points of the frame fall in a better position... Even my 90 was a pain (and that was after I drilled some new holes for bolts!)

True, the 80L frame needed 2 new holes but then it was very easy. Range about 270 miles urban and 300+ (personal best 320) when cruising. As said, if you need to buy a 6' length of pipe / wood you can  fold the back seats and shove it through.
