We wanted to let you know that 'Watchdog' is planning to run a feature on eBay on BBC1 at 8pm, Wednesday 5th December 2007. We were approached by the programme last week, and have worked with them since then to address the concerns that they have raised.

The feature will focus on the eBay feedback system, and in particular on instances when sellers have abused it, by either threatening to retaliate if given negative feedback or refusing to offer refunds or replacements unless buyers withdraw negative feedback that they have already left.

We regard the feedback system as the cornerstone of our marketplace. It relies on buyers giving fair and honest feedback on the transactions that they have had with sellers. More than five million feedback ratings are left on eBay.co.uk every week; the vast majority of them are positive and reflect the good experiences that our buyers and sellers generally have with each other.

When occasional disputes arise, we encourage buyers and sellers to resolve them amicably. However, in order for the integrity of the feedback system to be maintained, buyers have to be free to leave negative feedback for a transaction where they believe it is justified. In a small minority of cases, sellers may make it difficult for buyers to leave honest feedback. This behaviour is unacceptable, and in 2008 we intend to take swifter and more severe action against sellers who abuse the feedback system by either leaving retaliatory negative feedback or blackmailing buyers to remove negative feedback.

eBay’s reputation has a direct bearing on the health of our marketplace and on the success and livelihoods of our sellers, and so we take our appearance on programmes like 'Watchdog' very seriously. We will endeavour to put the cases raised into context, and to take strong action against feedback abuse to prevent future publicity of this nature.

I've always thought that the seller should be made to leave feedback first & not be able to wait & see what the buyer says....

As a buyer, I refuse to leave mine until the seller leaves theirs.  

I send a message to say that their item has been received and that I use the original mark 1A feedback method - if they are happy about my payment method, say so first and then I will comment on their product.

The guff about an 'automated reply method' that some sellers use is precisely that......  Guff.  Sadly, its the sellers with larger feedback that tends to use this so another handfull of feedback more or less to them is like a mossy bite on an elephant....

I think that is completely right.  Chronologically the buyer completes his side of the deal first (by paying) so should receive feedback first - good , bad or neutral according to how well he performed as a buyer .   Very few 'professional' ebay sellers do this though - some even say they will leave fb only after the buyer does.

Interesting thread. Got to say i would classify myself as a "professional ebayer"; 2 id`s with over 2000 selling feedbacks.

I never leave feedback untill the buyer does, i want to ensure they are happy with the product and I do use autofeedback. I do message my custoemrs upon despatch advising how i use feedback and prompt them to leave feedback first. If they dont they dont, as Bruce says 1 or 2 feedbacks when its already over 1000 on each ID is not going to affect much..

Guess its all down to preference but i simply dont have the time to reply to 70 odd feedbacks a month in person  :-/

there are various add`ons to ebay that will automatically populate feedback when the other part has left it for you, Positive to positive feedback, you can populate or alternate the message you leave..

you mean if the buyer leaves +ve, it leaves +ve in return?  What if the buyer leaves less than positive?

A positive is met with a positive, ive left mine so that any negs are not auto replied too..( ive only had 3 ever) i can deal with personally...

I'm sure you're a great ebayer Markie, but if you chose to, how could you configure it to respond to a negative?    With a negative in return?

on the add on i use its simply a preference check /uncheck option. I leave it unchecked.
