Sourcing new headlights
« on: 13 November 2009, 23:44:29 »

Where is the best place to source new headlight units. Both main beam adjusters have broken and the lenses aren't to clever even after a T-Cut and polish.
Just got back from Lymington this evening and it was an experience to say the least. :o

Top Tip: Never phaff about trying to adjust headlights in between rain showers.
The adjusters WILL break and you WILL get absolutely soaked trying to sort out a useable light.  ::)

The depo copys arent bad at all when it comes to beam on the road. Adjusters are still very week though. And the beam works on left and right hand drive, as opposed to just a flat beam for left hand drive on the genuine items

I find the only way is to turn the white plastic toothed bit at the back in conjunction with the allen key, they just break otherwise... :-/

I bought a pair of Depos off ebay. In my case it was a lot cheaper than buying the Hella as they are about 300 quid each here. The DEPO xenon cost me about 150 quid a pair and came from Germany to the UK incl shipping. I then stuffed them in the suitcase to Doha.

The build quality is not as good though as the originals and I remember I had to cut incisions to fix the ballast to the underside.

I think one of the main points is that it is a pain if you need to flatten the beam pattern. You have to take the high voltage supply off and stick your fingers in to get to the lever. The adjuster on the originals is a lot easier, you just remove the rubber protector at the main beam.

I did a comparision on these back in August, I'll try and find the link.

It is too early for me to talk about the adjusters as I've not had these lights on very long.

Regarding my beam pattern, my drivers headlight is a bit wonky, but causes no major concern. I think this is due to the cheaper manufacturing and therefore not all holes lining up properly.

Half tempted to try fixing the adjusters and trying a buffing wheel on the lenses one more time.

Is there a "how to.." on headlight refurbishment.

Yes and all of that.(someone with a memory that works :-) ) pays to make sure the beam is correct before installing.
