you can't check it, only way to check is to change it. Unless you have issues with it, or its a limited slip, its not worth touching really.

I have stains under the car presumably from diff oil but not sure.

you can check with a bendy straw, but only good to see if its up on oil. and how good it feels in your fingers.

From the guide:

Not technically "checking", I suppose, but it does the job.
