Facelift Climate Control
« on: 20 November 2009, 14:05:42 »

The climate control on my facelift ("W" reg 2.5CD) is playing up so I need to start troubleshooting - but without any info as to the way it is supposed to work makes it a bit of a bugger to work out which bit has packed up!

Has anyone got a schematic diagram of the system plus some sort of location diagram to show where all the sensors and actuators actually are (plus how to get at them!) please?

To give me a leg-up maybe someone (who has done this before) could suggest a few likely (and unlikely) problems? Currently all I ever get out of any vent is ambient temperature air - whatever temp setting is selected (either together, or L/R split). No heating; no chilling. All the various vent selections seem to work ok, as does the fan and the re-circ.

My guess is that, for some reason, neither heated nor chilled air is being admitted into the system. This suggests to me the failure of an actuator somewhere very 'early' in the system, or a sensor failure somewhere in that actuator's control circuit.

I've tried the Off/Auto reset (and can hear various wheezing and flapping noises coming from behind the fascia) but to no avail. Suggestions have been made that it is an HBV failure but I don't see how that could stop the air being chilled (unless, of course, there is some sort of interlock in the system - something which would be evident from a schematic).

Any ideas anyone? The weather's going to be getting colder over the next few weeks!!

Not an expert on this, but could HBV be shot AND ac cooler, giving you only ambient temp?

Question is, does the aircon compressor kick in when set to lo and eco turned off? (does the centre of the compressor turn).

Has the HBV been changed?

Have seen similar symptoms when the HBV is connected up wrongly.

Or someone with a warped sense of humour has connected the vacuum line that should come through the bulkhead to the climate system directly to the hbv (so causing the hbv to shut every time the engine runs)

Cheers guys - some good stuff to be checking out this weekend (particularly the bit about whether or not the a/c pump is running with ECO on/off).

Lots of suggestions for checking the various vac lines. Anyone got any pics showing what all the various routings should look like?

Gary how did you reset the climate control?

You press and hold ECO and OFF for about 10 seconds, you will hear the servos click and reset

Surely that's "Auto" and "Off"?

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Question is, does the aircon compressor kick in when set to lo and eco turned off? (does the centre of the compressor turn). The a/c pump works ok and, when running (eco=off), lowers the air output temp by about 6 deg c at the vents (using my trusty greenhouse thermometer!) - irrespective of the temp selected.

Has the HBV been changed? No (but it looks like it is about to be!).

Have seen similar symptoms when the HBV is connected up wrongly.

Looks like I've got myself an HBV change. The 'How-To' guide and various pics on this site suggest it is a pretty straighforward job but I have a couple of questions: 1) When refilling the coolant system is it self-bleeding? Or are there bleed valves anywhere? 2) And will any old (eg Halfords) antifreeze be ok to use? Or is this one of those occasions when it really is best to use what Vauxhall suggest!

Ok. I've changed the Heater Bypass Valve, flushed out the heater matrix  - both ways, several times, till the water ran clear (it had a brownish tinge to it at first - although I've seen much worse - but that cleared within seconds) and put lovely new bright red antifreeze in.

But I still don't have really hot air at the vents! Here's what I have:
"Hi" temp selected gives me tepid air;
"Lo" temp selected gives me ambient temp air (or chilled by about 6 deg C with the a/c pump running - ie Eco=Off);
Spinning the selector between the two extremes I can hear the airflow changing in the ducting suggesting (to me) that all the flaps and valves are working ok.

Any ideas folks?
